Other games can have multiple gamemodes just fine and the playercount is very steady too for DBD. Behaviour interactive is not a small indie company i think.
A long time ago DBD had the choice to either make the game prettier or make it run better (this second option would have been necessary to have 10-12 players on a map).
The game barely runs with Nemesis with 2 zombies and 4 survivors. Consoles could not handle 7 mobile objects without adjustments. This is a problem because DBD is now married with consoles who are a large portion of their player base.
In one sense they can't balance 1v4 so they have little chance at 2v8; but it would be extremely fun.
Because Lights Out is a lot easier to make. I believe 2vs8 will happen at some point, but it may take a while.
