What's the deal with Dredge cosmetics?

I read on the wiki that the "Skeletal Mass" cosmetic was originally planned to be the default model of The Dredge. Obviously, that's no longer the case. I initially had to wonder if this is because the Skeletal Mass skin is substantially cooler (or at least more complex) than what has become the default one and BHVR were thinking that the non-default skin should be the cooler one since it would be purchased more regularly. However, I then saw that Skeletal Mass released a fair amount of time about a month and 2 weeks after Dredge, so I have to wonder if the "original" skin was buggy and so they therefore decided to go ahead with release using an alternate skin as the primary.

Anybody have any insight to this that could sate my curiosity?
I'm also willing to acknowledge that people on the wiki could just be outright lying.

In LoL they changed a Champion from Skeleton to Lich (more fleshy) because it offended the Chinese/Asians. Maybe this was the same Reason for Dredge?
