Invitation could not be accepted

Just bought DBD on sale through Steam for friend, friend starts up game and chooses to skip tutorial. Online settings set to friends only, like me, who has never had a problem inviting people.

Friend shows up in list with only his name, no # number displayed.. Asked him for number to manually add just in case, found 1 result, it's him, but we're already friends. Attempted to invite again, he got "Invitation could not be accepted". He restarted, I try inviting, same error.

Tried to join and invite each other through steam friends list, same error.
Finally I look at the chat log where it says "Acheron has invited to the party." His name did not appear in that text.

Not sure what's going on. It's like BHVR didn't fully register a new account or something. Although he was able to join a game just fine solo.

Any help?

Turns out I needed to restart my game I guess. Then he had a number attached to his name. Weird.

this also happens sometimes after a match for my friend, they have to restart in those instances too.
