That would be more reasonable than just having both offerings be wasted, now wouldn't it.
Your fellow survivors might just be nearby but out of sight, and you can't really rely on them to actually remain together. I've noticed that people (in the lower ranks at least) like to run off and do their own thing at the beginning rather than stick with someone else.
The game is still loaded with bugs as well, so the Shroud of Binding could probably just not be working as intended.
My guess: the other three started together, near the killer, the other two got a quick generator while he was off hooking the guy he caught. Meanwhile I'm about as far away from all of them as I could possibly be.
