It doesn't have to be open for us to hear it.
I'd disagree that the hatch is useless. It just gives you more options for escape, really. Especially in the event of both gates being close to each other.
you're also presuming that both the survivor and the killer knows where the hatch is at all times. the reality is that isn't true. even keeping an eye out for it, as killer i know where it is probably only half the time, and if my narrow survivor escapes have meant anything it seems like i'm on the high end of that.
