Is it mandatory to have 5 players in order to start a game?

For example, if you and only 3 friends have the game, could you start a 3v1 match? Or will we be unable to start a game unless we have the full 5?

I don't have an official answer, but I maybe the private matches you can have would not have a required amount of people. The version they had at PAX there had to be 4 survivors and 1 killer .

Its a question of balance, its designed around 4 players and one killer. As for is it possible to play with 3? A dev will need to anwser.

Hey there, Lead designer here. The ranked mode (main mode) requires 5 players. The kill your friends mode (which is for funsies) can be played with 2 to 5 players. The game auto-balances to the current amount of survivors.
