Can you escape a hook?

Title. I get the M1 prompt to attempt to escape, but so far in my admittedly short play time I haven't managed to be sucessful and it's only sped up my death. So is there a percent chance? Or am I simply doing it wrong?

You have a 5% chance to escape each time you press M1, but at the cost of 25% of your remaining max health. If your health bar reaches 50%, the entity will try to kill you.

Don't do it unless you know you will for sure die on that hook (2nd to last man, no one is coming for you, etc).
Otherwise, just hang in there.
Especially if killer is like 10 meters away
There is nothing more stupid than getting that 10% and running into the killer standing next to you...

I've got plenty of people who unhooked as soon as I hooked them, just to get hooked once more.

There is a small percentage to get free, you get about 3/4 tries until you have to start smashing the space bar. It does speed up your death, but I mostly use it when the killer decides to camp you and the other survivors have no clear chance of getting you.
I have escaped about 3 times out of the 20 (give or take a few) times I have been hooked.

It must be less then 25% health loss, as you can try to escape 3 times on a fresh hook before the struggle starts. I agree the entity starts about 50% health. But I have (several times) done three escape attempts on the hook before triggering the entity. And I'm always right near 50% after that third attempt.

I have escaped a hook one time only using this. It does work.

It's about 15% health loss from what I can tell. Maybe 20% :)

You can 100% escape a hook if the following conditions are true:

1) This is your first or POSSIBLY 2nd hook. 3rd hook = 100% death.
2) If this is your second hook and you were ABOVE the 50$ mark when you got off the first one, otherwise instant death.
3) The killer doesn't hook camp you, or your survivor buddies are extremely 1337.
4) Your survivor buddies actually want altruism points and actually care enough to give you a visit.
5) You don't try to hit the get off the hook button at all. You just hang there, giving your buddies as much time as possible to get to your hook.
6) Finally, your buddy has to press the appropriate button to unhook you.

Only then, if all 6 conditions are TRUE will you 100% of the time get off the hook and continue to have a normal life!

You get a total of 4 chances to try and escape the hook.
Holding M1 AS SOON as the killer guts you on the hook, gives you that one extra chance

Yep, you can get off the hook as others have said. I had a game where it was just me and anoth person, I got hooked right before they escaped. The killer ran off after them and I somehow managed to immediately get myself off the hook and mad a dash to exit and won.

I once unhooked with the killer right in front me. I kicked him into the face and was able to have a few seconds advantage before he tried to hook me again.

Base Chance of escaping is 5%. Usually only best to do as a last ditch effort and maybe you will get lucky, or maybe you have a pouch and get even more lucky.
