Pick up people on generators

How do I pick up people that are doing gens instead of just hiting them?
I haven't played this game in a while so I don't remember how.

Same button for striking your weapon, if they are sitting there building it, right infront of you, you should be able to pick them up off of it, . with same button, I've done it a few times.

Ive just now tried to hit a survivor without lunge when hes fixing gen, wasn't able to pick him up for some reason...

u need to be really close

Just hit the attack button when you are right next to them.
I honestly cannot remember the last time a survivor has actually been unattentive enough for me to actually grab them off a gen though.

This happens a lot with michael myers tho, with his tier 1 undetectable evil within.
