What are totems?

(I'm new) I don't recall the game telling me what totems are / do in the tutorials. I've cleansed one before, but it just fell over. I've seen some people cleanse it and it grants a blue aura. Can anyone fully explain this to me? Thanks.

basically there are perks for killers called hexes which look like totems if they had a fire under them, destroying those totems will remove the associated perk from the match and considering hex perks have the strongest effects, you will want to get rid of them. The blue aura is a new type of perk for survivors called boon in which it is hexes but for survivor, you have to stand in the blue range (24m) to recieve its benefits

Blue totems are buff totems related to "Boon: Name" perks that survivors have.

Orange totems are hex totems related to "Hex: Name" perks that killers have.

Non coloured totems are dull totems that can be turned into boon totems and have interactions with some hex totem perks.

Hex totems take longer to bless than dull totems.
