How do Tomes work?
I left the game for a few years and this is all new to me. How do I level up? What happens when the "rift/tome" is closed? Do all the cosmetics never become available again?

Yes cosmetics are not available anymore when it's closed.
Though after a period of time (often 6 months) they are available in the store to buy.

The rift is basically a battle pass system. You get exp after a match and when you get enough it becomes a rift shard. Ten rift fragments will get you a level in the rift itself. You get rewards based on how far you leveled the rift.

Now the tome is a set of challenges that comes with each rift. By starting from the left usually at what is a prologue and doing the challenges till you get to the epilogue. Where each tome has four chapters. Which is each a page of challenges.

Rewards for doing the tome are a few things. When doing the active tome. A challenge will give you blood points and rift fragments. How much you get depends on the type of challenge. There are two types. A regular challenge which can or are meant to be done between multiple matches give less then a master challenge. The master challenge is one that has to be done in a single match. They will give you more bp and fragments but also a piece of lore. By reaching the epilogue of a chapter in the tome unlocks a charm you can equip to killer or survivor.

Now if you go to the archive it will let you choose previous tomes from the previous rifts. While the rewards from previous rifts may be unobtainable. Depending if they put them in the store or not after time. You can always choose to do the older challenges. Getting Bloodpoints, lore and the charms from the older tomes. You just will never get rift fragments from older challenges. Rift fragments will only come from the most current tome and from match exp.

  • completing previous' tome challenges are a great way to earn bloodpoints and spend them on character blood web progression - i.e. enabling more and more perks
  • completing current tome challenges are a way to earn cosmetics (usually 2 full character outfits, or 2 killer and 1 survivor outfit; plus a ton of useless 'charms' - small cosmetic objects which survivor can wear on his belt - perhaps to make killer easier recognize one Claudette from another 😕)
  • each rift contains 70 levels (each costs 10 rift fragments, while each challenge gives either 3 or 5 fragments; and there are approx. 105 challenges in each tome (4 parts with 18-28 challenges each)), and there are levels which grant you Auric Cells; plus, you gain a whole rift level when reaching terminal node of each part of the tome
  • rift access costs 1000 auric cells; and by reaching rift level 69, you gonna fully reimburse all 1000 AUs, meaning you only have to buy rift pass once (provided you complete the next one when you buy access again)
  • rift fragments are also granted for each 500 XP points, meaning you gonna usually reach level 70 approx. when completing just 85 out of 105 challenges
  • however, the most iconic outfits are only available in the Store, and cost 650-1080 AUs, some of which are not even available for iridescent shards, which you can earn by playing tens of hours and more
  • killer challenges are usually completed in one match (although sometimes require sacrificing the match gameplay and farming it), because everything depends on the killer only; while survivor challenges are usually time-demanding and very situation-dependent (they typically require other survivors to perform something for the challenge to trigger, say, be hooked at least twice so that you can unhook them safely; or do not touch chests before you do and so on); some challenges are marginally completable
