Freddy always seems to have licensing problems, Mortal Kombat 9 was removed from digital stores and online play was unavailable because they lost the license to Freddy, who was in the game as a playable fighter.

A large part of this is under the current laws, the copyright has gone back to the Wes Craven estate after 2019. So what's the problem? Well... technically, Warner Bros/New Line Cinema still hold the rights to international A Nightmare on Elmstreet stuff, and given DbD is canadian owned, it now has this weird legal issue between the two. Basically, BHVR would have to make a deal with both Warner Brothers and the Wes Craven estate to get anything new.

This isn't quite the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ it seems, as there was no legal battle when the rights reverted. It just quietly reverted back. My guess they pulled MK 9 from the digital shelves because it was a fairly old game, and they didn't feel like getting into negotations over royalties to a game that at the time was 8 years old and probably not selling well anymore. But DbD could probably negotiate and get a decent deal if they were inclined to do so. Thankfully the Nightmare franchise isn't nearly the ♥♥♥♥ show that Friday the 13th turned out to be.

That's pretty much it. yeah, Freddy has taken on many forms, but none of them would really work. Maybe long arm freddy, but beyond that it'd be pre-burned, OG, and Remake Freddy

Maybe Wes Craven's a New Nightmare Freddy, hatless Freddy as well. And maybe one where his claw is the drugs like from Dream Warriors.
