Ruin isn't really in effect until after you start getting the easy gens, so you just pop 1 gen and now you know where all the totems (not to mention chests/gens) are.
Also knowing the area where a dull totem is can be really useful against NOED. When the last gen pops just run to the totem and see if it is lit.
That said, it has no Z-axis, so if you are in an in-doors map with a notification, you would not know if the totem is on the first or second floor.
Small game is also nice if you haven't bothered with bones all game and suddenly have to find NOED.
Counterforce seems to be a kind of snowball anti hex perk that you need to get rolling and that might waste you time chasing the totem trail. Probably awesome against hex heavy builds but underwhelming otherwise.
With counterforce you can easily do all 5 totems by yourself in the first 2-3 minutes by finding a totem right away which isn't hard then head directly to the next one unless you happen to spot on one the way to the far away one. If you lose count or by some crazy turn of events someone else on your team actually does a totem you still know when they are all done when you don't see one light up as you finish one. Takes no time at all, so much faster than Small Game and being able to make sure noed isn't happening is so satisfying.
I've been using it for 4 days now and 8 maybe even 9 out of 10 games all of them get done, it's glorious.
