Mod ban rumor
I’ve been hearing rumors that mods are going to be banned mid season or maybe even next patch. I was wondering if people are going to get banned for having icon mods. Mods that change icons for perks or add-ons or offerings things like that.

I don’t wanna get banned for just having custom icons because I think they look cool. so any heads up would be appreciated, thank you!

(P.S: I know there’s a big gray area when it comes to mods, so I just wanna see if there’s any sort of clarity that can be given, especially if It’s something as small as an icon png change)

haven't heard anything like such.. but if we are modifying game files and bhvr goes Steam anti-cheat way.. they will give a warning to revert the game files.. there are so many people using mods, even the fog whispers.. they will not ban initially.. only warning for those using the mods..

The devs said long ago that they will not ever ban you for using custom perk icons or modifying visuals of menus and UIs. However, if EAC picks up modified files and decides to ban you, they will not help you get unbanned. So it's always been a "use at own risk" sort of thing.

I'd love to know where you heard these rumours. You got a source?

There was a DBD Youtuber who made a community post stating that they were hearing rumors of a ban coming into place since people started abusing things like mods making trapper/hag traps bright pink, etc

...I mean, a mod like that I can 100% see people getting a ban for. That's just unfair game advantage right there.
Imagine a mod where you could see spirit in her phase form 100% of the time. You can bet your ass the download for that mod would be 100% and people would justify it saying "THE GAME IS FUN AGAIN NOW THAT I KNOW WHERE SHE IS AT ALL TIMES."
At the same time, imagine a mod turning every single survivor into wearing hot pink clothing. Would you consider this fair as a survivor?

Icons are one thing. Game files to modify what characters, traps, etc look like is another thing entirely.

Yeah that's a different area of modding entirely than perk icons.
Perk icons are stored in a side folder of unencrypted thumbnails. you can literally just open the images in MS Paint or some ♥♥♥♥ and "mod" your own perk icons.

What you're talking about is unpacking and modifying .pak files of the game's essential textures that they use to render things in, like grass, trees, rocks, and other environmentals (including traps). EAC will detect that very quickly, and I believe there was a ban wave a while back where they caught a bunch of people using FOV hacks by modifying the same files. Right around the release of like 4.2.0 they put a flag out for anyone who touched those files.

What I think the YTer was talking about was the fact that the leaked PTB build from Ghostface's release has started up an impromptu modding community. They're playing and modding for an outdated version of the PTB Dev Branch that got published by accident. You have to manually connect with other people in custom games, you cannot connect to servers, and you're stuck on that particular version. The devs are currently very tentative about the whole thing because it's encouraging people to dig around in the game files that they shouldn't have access to.

Mod ban Rumor PT. 2
"Implemented changes to prevent players modifying some in-game files (such as models, textures and images)."

So what does this entail? Does anyone know if we can still have perk/addon/offering/etc icon mods? Or Do y'all think that we're going to get banned. Any information that anyone can provide or share would be appreciated a ton!

Icon packs are fine. You're not going to get banned for them (though apparently you will have to reinstall them).

The changes were to prevent players from editing actual gameplay elements and assets (basically anything besides the UI). Such as player models, environmental textures and audio.
UPDATE: Turns out the rumor was true. Now the main question is that what do now

I wanna believe this but i'm lowkey scared of getting banned now that they've decided to put active anti measures for mods/icon changes

Again, icon packs are fine as you don't need to extract the in-game files to access those. If players attempt to extract the in-game files (the .pak files), THEN they'll get banned. Icon Packs, as Yoshi said, are fine.

You can install them but they won't work. Only portraits work now. As for banning, I doubt anyone can provide any evidence of anyone ever being banned for modifying game files.

People were doing things like making Trapper's traps hot pink to be more visible and the like, so these changes were to prevent that from being possible.

Obviously that is known, but I'm mostly talking about making changes for icons, not textures
