they spawn inconsistently and sometimes really hard to spot

it's meant to be random so it's not an automatic free escape.

Rather random. Never upstairs tho, when it comes to multiple stairs maps (even in Meat Plant).
I think each map has atleast 6 different spawn points, good luck trying to predict where they are.

The most consistent spawnpoints seem to be near or in the Killer Shack, in the middle of the big building of interest (such as the big barn or the tree of dead animals on the farm maps) or smack dab in the middle of the map. You often hear it before you see it. Good luck in the fog!

Way more now. It used to be 6~, and they were very predictable (I used to know all of them), now they randomized it entirely. (Even tho there is still some constant in spawn points, like the shack and such.)

In the middle of pallets clusters is where I see most on open maps. In or near key structures that can also spawn the basement is also common.

When I am running a 3 gen strat the hatch always appears in my base of operation, so it's possible it "randomly" spawns near where the action is.

Then again I remember a game I was survivor in playing against a hillbilly doing the 3 gen strat. It was that really long map with the shack on one side and the building on the other. Spawned opposite of the action.

So who knows.
Computers push random to patterns after so much time. Less players is less times to develope a pattern. So it will appear more random when less people play.

I play Hag with a 3 gen strategy, and can confirm it doesn't go that way. The hatch seems very random to me, and it's very rarely in my 3 gens formation.

So it's totally randomized? Then the win is totally RNG when it's one survivor left!

What would you want exactly ? Trafic cones showing you the way ?

Well that's one use of traffic cones in some places.

The first thing you should do is check the landmarks - The Shack, The Barn, The Coal Tower, around the Iron Works, the Cow Tree, the Slaughter House, on top of the hill(s), around Jungle Gyms, around the Bloodlodge, around harvesters, bottom floor of the Prenn Asylum, the red room on The Game etc. Always check the places which stand out.

Just played earlier with me left and the killer idles near the trap door. Even after I'm right 10 feet away in front of him, he just stand near the trap door and do nothing.

So I try him by repairing the nearest gen and he suddenly looked at me, but still right near the hatch. I finished the repair and go to gate safely.

So I assumed it was a bug that prevents him from moving.

It's more randomized now, but basically, check:

- around basement
- major buildings or landmarks (e.g. the harvester, the rock formations/tree on Shelter Woods, killer shack, etc.)
- next to generators

On Swamp, it's possible for it to spawn literally in the corner of the map or along the edge. On Gideon it's always the bottom floor. You kinda get a feel as you go along.
