Silent Hill Guide For New Fans
If any of you are interested in Silent Hill after the recent update announcement then this will serve as a helpful guide as to what you should get/avoid

1) Avoid the HD Collection at all costs. The collection is widely known among fans as being the WORST way to play the games. It is glitchy, ruins the atmosphere, changes the voice actors, and can even crash your system. It is by far one of the worst Collections out there and that’s no exaggeration

2) Silent Hill 1 is on PSN for PS3. It is also very easy to find through other methods. Although it is a PS1 game, it still holds up.

3) Silent Hill 2 is probably the one most people know about and for good reason. It is a good place to start and is not connected to the previous game. This is also where Pyramid Head/Red Pyramid comes from

4) Silent Hill 3, a direct continuation of 1 and has some of the best puzzles. This is where Heather comes from.

5) Silent Hill 4 is the black sheep of the series. Arguably one of the scariest, but in terms of gameplay it tries to change things up. You either like it or don’t.

6) Every other Silent Hill game was not made by the original devs for 1-4. Homecoming is one of the worst ones and not worth playing unless you’ve done the rest. Origins tries to be a prequel to 1 but isn’t as good and contradicts some things. Shattered Memories has a fantastic story and tries to psychologically profile you instead of having obvious wrong/right answers (actually worth playing). Downpour is ok, just don’t expect 1-4.

7) 1-4 can be found on PC and patched with fan patches. If you do not have a PS2, go for this

8) Get disapointed that Konami killed the series and cancelled Silent Hills/PT

9) Use this website to patch the PC versions https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Silent_Hill_3

10) 1 is on PS3 PSN store, 2-4 have old PC versions that can be patched with the link above (3 as an example). If you can’t find the PC versions on Amazon or EBay, then you’ll have to search for keyword “abandonware”
Any Questions?

I REALLY suggest playing 1 for yourself. The story is actually very confusing to explain, and ever since Origins some people end up accidentally adding information that was not intended. If you can handle 2, 1 isn’t actually much of a downgrade
Does the original have tank controls or can you change it like in SH2?

SH1 does have tank controls (and you can't change to normal controls) but you can get used to it relatively quickly. Plus, SH1 is an experience you should really experience for yourself. Use an PS1 emulator, find a SH1 rom and play the game yourself. Plus, it's not that long.

The camera is the same as 2, and theres a button to make the camera center behind you. I actually recommend tank controls over regular since the camera shifts a lot to be atmospheric.

I'm trying to get 3 to work for future use and the "Silent Hill 3 PC Fix by Steam006 1.9.1" on the fix wiki is said to be a trojan. Anyone got confirmation?

I tried that and it wouldn't let me change the resolution anymore.

Don't use the in-game resolution setting. You need to edit the .ini the the script folder that comes with the Widescreen Fix.

Tbh, i'd say that Resident Evil is waaaaaaaay better than Silent Hill, so just go play that instead.

Nah bro. Resident Evil is more fun (most of the time with games like RE4 and RE2make) but Silent Hill is way scarier and more atmospheric.

EDIT: Silent Hill is also pretty fun once the horror of it all has worn off.

Resi isn't really scary like Silent Hill.

Besides the RE1make, Resident Evil isn't scary at all so yeah.

True. Hard to be scared of something that you can just spray down with a machine gun.
