Switch your desktop resolution to whichever you want to use while the game is off. As for resolutions if you have a 1920x1080 native resolution then the best two options are 1620x1080 (3:2) and 1440x1080 (4:3).

After you've set your desktop to that resolution you'll also want to change the scaling mode from "Aspect-Ratio" to "full-screen" which for Nvidia control panel is the "adjust desktop size and position" tab and apply that setting.

Something to consider is that some monitors can look ugly with not at native resolution, although generally with any decent quality monitor it isn't usually an issue it's more some of the cheap monitors and TVs being used as a monitor that this happens. Anyway if it looks good then great if it looks terrible you can change it so that your GPU does the scaling instead of the display which will greatly help in the cases of it looks terrible and is simple to try one way then the other to see. The results should be obvious. On Nvidia control panel this is also on the "adjust desktop size and position tab" and by default it is set to display.
Start game and play. Nothing needs to be done in any files.
I find 1620x1080 to look almost identical quality wise to 1920x1080.
With 1440x1080 it's more obvious however I think it still looks fine, just the skill checks and some of the UI screens look much smaller but to me they feel much easier to hit and it's one of those things you get used to very quickly, and then if you went back to original you'd practically laugh out loud because skill checks are gigantic.
If you do stick with 1440x1080 you can also enable Nvidias quality upscaling mode which makes it look much nicer at all times with no performance lost. The only way to enable it is to use Nvidia Profile Inspector on the profile for Dead By Daylight and scroll down until you find it "NV Quality upscaling" and enable it. Then fire up the game. This also works for 1620x1080 as well as any lower than native resolution but is most noticeable with 1440x1080 or lower on a 1920x1080 native resolution monitor.
