This. Dance With Me can make scratch marks disappear. Research is your friend, OP.
No assumptions here, as windows aren't the only place a survivor can fast vault. Research is still your friend- Distortion and Lightweight can also make scratch marks disappear either immediately or rapidly.
Also, survivors can simply stop running and crouch away with Urban Evasion at high speed. You said there's 'no way' they could have stopped sprinting, but I don't see how that could be possible without a broken Shift key.
First problem I've noticed - They are too wide. It doesn't show you direct location, but in many occasions you need to guess which survivors passed by. For example near the wall which leads to two different paths, if survivors take left (for example), there will be scratch marks at the beggining of right path too.
Second problem: They appear after 2-3 seconds late. For example : Basically survivors stuns me with a pallet and keeps running straight forward, my view is blocked by the pallet when I try to follow scratch marks, they literally appear after 2-3 seconds, which is super annoying. At this stage, honestly nothing surprises me anymore, so it is what it is. What makes me sad and kinda salty is scratch marks had the problem for years and they are still ♥♥♥♥.
It was exactly like you mentioned, they just stopped in the middle of nowhere, sometimes in the middle of an open field.
Checked surv perks: nothing that would fit the situation and description of what happened. At first I thought it was urban evasion, but if so the survs AND THEIR BLOOD POOLS wouldn't just ninja vanish, they couldn't have gone far or somewhere that wasn't obvious. Dance With Me and Q&Q would be the next pick but no windows around. Lightweight wouldn't make fresh tracks sudenly just end in nothing, tracks don't disapear faster than your walk speed towards the surv. And as I mentioned, it was not just the scratches that would vanish, their blood drips would aswell.
One of the survs that I complained to about this issue said he had small lag spikes everytime I seemed to lose track of him so there's 2 possible conclusions out of it for me: Either random connection spikes affect it (even if you don't feel them happening) or survs can purposelly lag switch on their end to get this effect. The last possibility seems a bit far fetched considering the killer is the host but...
