Do we have to be a group of 5 to play this game?

I'm sure this has been answered already 1000 times in the forum but we're having a hard time finding related discussions so we ask.
Do you HAVE to be 5 players to play this game? I mean, we are two and would like to try it. Do we have to get paired with 3 strangers online or is it possible to play only between us?

you can go for Kill your friends, there is just 2 needed atleast i guess, im not sure never try it out.

There is a kill your friends mode that has all perks and items unlocked, which lets you play a game with a minimum of 2 players. However, you cannot gain points to level up your characters.

If one of you wants to play as the killer, you can't play together with rewards turned on. If you want to all play as survivors, you get random people to fill in the missing slots, and you can get rewards. This is the only way to play together while still getting rewards at the end of the round.

We don't care about rewards so the Kill your Friends mode is exactly what we were looking for. Thanks for your answers!

You only need to be a group of 5 if you want to play Kill your Friends (private game) with 1 Killer and 4 Survivors.

Otherwise, two of you can jump in Survive with Friends (group mode) and join any public lobby and get matched up wtih 2 more survivors and a killer. You can also play Kill your Friends just you as killer and your friend as survivor (or vice versa) but this is a poor way to play the game.

Do note that thie community hates Survive With Friends groups with a passion, but I'll not get into that. You don't need to worry about it as a beginner.

Voice Comms is what makes SWF OP, it negates half of the perks the killer could use, thus nerfing them, plus without comms you can't tell a team mate you are being chased and to instead focus on gen rush.

We fully understand this, but we hate online matchmaking with all our bodies and souls so that's enough for us. We just want to try and feel the game, the maps, etc.

You will not get a feel of the game playing 2 player killer vs. Survivor. This is like being in the kiddie pool at Disney World Blizzard Beach.
