Customers don't come in my shop
I don't know why, but I played through the entire first day and not one customer came into my shop... I had some pedastals set up with a potion on one of them, but nobody came in...
am I doing something wrong or is the game just broken?

I did that, but that's tedious as hell, and it doesn't let you set your own prices or haggle with them when you do that... :steamfacepalm:

You can if you use the plus and minus key that are by the num lock on your keyboard. The same way you do it before placing an item in your shop. I hope this helps you man.
You're mistaken. I just tried it and while it changes the margin for the item in my hand, it doesn't change it for the person I'm talking to. The margin just stays at 110%. :steamsad:

It should do both. Sometimes the margin in your hand when talking to a customer is shown and the item margin you are giving to the customer will be different.
The margins when you sell directly to customers are fixed based on you skill levels

So, basically, you're saying I gotta sell directly to customers until I can afford to make my shop look nice enough for people to actually come in? :steamfacepalm:
That's so lame. :d4_sleep:
Starting the game off with some grinding seems like pretty pisspoor game design. I'm just gonna go play Recettear.

Try to unlock the shelves or the big table , not the first table, the one with 2 big items and 9 small ones , you can put a lot of different items in the shelves or on the table , that should attract more customers. To unlock them you need to buy them with the special points you get when you finish a quest so do quests that are easy for you , get some points and unlock the furnitures that will make your job easier.

I had no problem with people coming in on the first day, four pedestals with potions. Maybe lower your prices at first? I set them at 15 and bumped it up gradually as I made some money. You can run out and sell on the street when you see a person "talk" about a certain item, I assume they pay more if they really want it? Take the quest to sell potions and upgrade your profit skill, and check the trash can by the door periodically for free profit.

This I learned my second time playing, because I spent all my money on inventory the first time and couldn't afford anywhere to place the items! Playing Recettear is not training for this game, be prepared to learn how to play.

Check out the guides section in the community hub. They definitely help out:

You don't HAVE to go sell to people, but a shop with one pedestal is not very inviting. Who goes to a restaurant that has one chair and no tables? Unlock shelves as soon as you can, too. They hold 12 small items of most types. There are a few things they can't hold that are considered small, but you can toss a dozen potions on each one so I think they are worth the early investment.

I found that it's actually faster to run around selling directly to people for the first little bit to make some quick cash, then you can set up the shop once you have a bit more money. I found that out after I played a couple days and was basically wondering the same thing as you were. You have to keep the price margin fairly low, too, or they will either pick it up and drop the item, or try to steal it. I found 120% was pretty good at first, and now I rarely have thieves at 140% with only one of the anti-thief perks unlocked.

My biggest issue is that it does feel like too much of a grind at some stages, and it's awfully repetitive.

Oh, and unlock the inn as soon as you can. It's basically free money.
