Basically there are different types of game modes in Teeworlds. DDNET focuses on the DDRace aspect of the game, which is mostly about cooperative play progressing through a puzzle map (sometimes very faily).
The DDNET client offers functionality that the normal client doesn't have. For instance a hook collision line and key bindings if you want to play on your own with a dummy (a tee which is you and you can switch between the two).
That's why the teeworlds client may have the better UI / graphics - because the DDNET client focuses mainly on the racing game mode.
