Competitions - Can You Pause, Leave, Return, and Then Continue?

I saw a player do it and he/she/it beat me out at the last minute yesterday. Here is what happened:

Emerald Lake Predator Challenge: 7pm to 9pm

I entered the competition at 7:21 pm and noticed that player xxxx already had accumulated 90 points. I went ahead and completed the competition and ended up in 1st place with 185 points. Now, I remained in 1st place for a good 1/2 hour until player xxxx started accumulating points again. In the last 1/2 hour of the competition, he/she/it went from 90 points to 215 and won first place. My question is how can anyone manage to play at the very beginning and still play at the very end of a 2 hour competition?

Now, if you watch these competitions closely, you will see other strange things happening... like players with no stats winning and/or players returning late in the game to win (as I described above).

I think these competitions need to be sanitized and kept honest for all to enjoy and should have no interventions from the devs or support IMHO.

Yes you can leave and return, as long as you use your scoring time before the 2 hour competition period is over. I do it often.
