How to equip lures?

I bought a few lures when I hit lvl 4 but it doesnt let me equip any of them, it just says "Can't equip item." when I do.

Did I miss something, is there some pre-requisite to equip a lure that I'm not aware of?

Assuming you bought spoon lures, you need a spinning rod to use them.

Thank you, but now it's not letting me equip bait, I take it either is not necessary with lures or I'm missing something else...

EDIT: Not letting me equip a floaty thing either, wtf am I doing wrong?

You only equip floats/bait when using normal hooks, spoons you use by themselves.

So they just sit at the bottom of the lake or something, or is there a specific way of using them?

Seems you're not a regular fisher :) With spoons you keep reeling it slowly towards you, hoping a fish catch it on the way.
I guess a way to explain it is that it's supposed to "simulate" a smaller prey

There are some strategies involved but, just reel it at the lowest or next lowest speed towards you and you'll eventually run into something.

I do think these error messages could be a lot better. Can't do X? Why not?
A better message would be something like "This X cannot be used with this Y rod. You need a Z rod.".
