3 RL Days hunting this ever elusive Unique Mahi... Any pro captains out there lol?

Funny thing is the first time I tried for Mahi I got the uni and then trophy. The regular one was the elusive one for me. That's certainly not the case most of the time, but I got it that time.

I got mine on the 6ft yellow crank, but watch out. Lots o big fish like those cranks too.

Well I am actually doing the mission "Kaiji No Ri Hunt: Squid chain" This requires you to use a squid chain and trolling octopus. I have been chasing the wind for 3 days... Nailin Mahi all day just not the uni I need. I have tried all sizes of Trolling octopus available to me with no luck.

Oh yeah, the mission. I did do that already and that is where I got the uni now that you reminded me of the mission. I have been getting them on cranks too.

What spot(s) are you trying? I found a spot that gets you nothing but mahi when using bucktails only. I just gotta wait till I get home to give coordinates.

What speed are you trolling? I have the $60 boat and leave it on 1% throttle which gets me to between 3 - 5 knots and so I throttle down when it gets to 5 knots and I get more fish on when the speed gets around 1 knot.

this one was a tough one for me, I got mine on a #5/0. Sounds like u got the wind figured out, just need to get lucky with a big enough uni. My favorite spot is sw of the boat launch on a north wind, nearly no by catch there

location is -1938, -82. I caught mine near the island. Just troll between this spot and the south island on a north wind and u will get nearly all mahi. Good luck

Ive been trolling around the island depending on the wind where the depths change. And I have had a TON of success with the squid chain and a 3/0 trophy Octopus. One after another Mahi. But on my 2nd rod with the 7/0 Trolling oct with the trophy Squid chain... Nothing no bites at all. THe max size ive been able to get in 3ish days is about 44lb mahi I think. SO it seems I need a bigger hook but they just dont bite.

I think this is my issue. I have the 3/0 Trolling octopus from the missions and the 7/0 from the missions and nothing in between and I am not of the level to purchase one. Is this mission a dead end for me? a 5/0 sounds like to me that would be a perfect size for a uni mahi.

I think i got the 5/0 from a mission or a challenge, maybe take a break and do some other missions. I never caught a mahi with a hook larger than 5/0. I did have to catch 3 or 4 unis before I got one larger that 77.2 lbs

Ill take a look at the other missions. THought i was pretty much done with them all except for the monster ones and the mahi. (oh and the insane catch like 40 of each fish one)
