It's really a very basic (poor) method of trolling, reminiscent of what you might do in a small pond with a bare bones jon boat.

Well that's not what I wanted to hear. Not sure why they wouldn't allow you to use them as just rod holders as well as for trolling like in The Fisherman. I guess I will keep my $25 since I didn't like actually trolling in The Fisherman
