You can catch grass pickerel and bass in the starter lake. Which is Texas Lone Star Lake or LSL
how do i do that

Try spinning or casting rod with lures like spoons spinners or jigs
It could take a minute to get to the bigger fish especially if you don't have premium for the XP and currency bonus. Once you get to level 26 and Quanchkin lake there are plenty of big cats and alligator gar there, as well as Unique bass, fresh water drum and bowfin. It's still one of my favorite waterways.

spinning setup with spoons like suggested above. Once you are able to buy a rod stand you can use redworms or small minnows with a float setup and rest it on the rod stand while you use the spinning rod.

Why do you leave?
You can get 1300 credits and a bait coin from doing an exploration mission. If you level up while fishing you also get credits + a bait coin. You should have gotten 200 credits the first time you traveled there from completing the first level of visitation achievement.
If you are leaving every time your net is filled, don't do that. Just advance to the next day. Then you sell your fish and pay the next day's fee. No additional travel fee needed that way. I made that same exact mistake when I started.
Spend 8 bait coin (for this map only) and catch the fish you can't keep and as others state 'free' (I think that is the go) to move to next day use T key. Also when you have enough coin buy the next bigger size net, for bigger catch (storage) and returns.
Then start thinking what better gear you can get for advancement in the game. Don't use bait coin for gear but in game money.
Game money is needed to travel so collect it.
Don´t rush going the quick you can for big ones, you´ll get there knowing too little and not properly geared up.
My advice is take lake by lake try to do the Challenges and Missions you get great rewards and sweet XP that takes you up the levels smothly within the learning curve and when you get to higher catches you´ll be more knowledgeable of what you are doing and what you should do and enjoy the game better.
Most of the players start playing go rush for farming on better lakes than they get tired and stop playing because they get bored, try to avoid that if you really want to have fun and experience the game as it´s intended by design.

so you play a bit to get skill and see how things are goin, but you start with the real stuff at level 8,9,10.
but just chill and enjoy this game.
