Reel speed auto resetting. Just started happening, is it happening to you?
I've already made a bug report about this but figured I would throw in a hand to help the devs to see if this is a global bug or just a bug for a certain rod/reel setup. Not only I but 2 other people just started noticing in the last hour that upon reeling back in our reel speed would reset to 1 making us take notice of this and then manually resetting it back to what it was. This is every single time. If it's happening to you as well please post rod/reel and line setup.

This also is happening with sitting with a bobber. When fish starts to move the bobber, reel resets to 1. And yes, I this is something new.

Been happening to me since day 1

Well we just went back out and it seems to have been fixed already for us? Not sure on this whole thing. I came back here to delete the post but I'll leave it up for a bit longer.

it does not only reset to level 1... it will reset to whatever you have adjusted to most often. While float fishing this will be level 1 for me, but I run usually at level 2 or 3 for Lift and Drop or Stop and Go respectively with lures. Whenever a fish strikes but fails to hook itself while i'm reeling it in at level 4 it drops back down to the 2 or 3 setting (whichever i was using before going to 4 for the reel in.

yep, this has been happening for me since day 1 as well.
The speed resets (not everytime though) when fish are biting my bait on float... and when I am reeling back in and the message is shown that either I striked too soon, or that bait was pulled too far away (with SHIFT pressed still).

edit:
rod & reel setup doesn't seem to matter much, I think it happens with me with every setup

Nobody is mentioning where they are when this happens? Personally, it happens a lot in North Carolina, has been reported many times before and the Dev's are well aware of the problem/bug.

+1, I've had it happen everywhere myself, since day 1. It seems quite random, sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't do it. Place/Time doesn't seem to play a part (for me at least). Can't add any more info on the matter that hasn't already been mentioned. It's almost as if the strike makes the game want to set 4 speed (as it does), but since it was a just a bite instead of a proper strike, it doesn't always properly restore the previously had setting (Going back down from 4). Well, that's what seems to be happening to me.

I had it happen to me several times, with different setups. What usually fixes it is switching to another rod and then switch back to the rod Im using, it'll reset the rod and everything will be fine again.

Posted about this a few days back

Was given a temp solution by another player, swap to another rod then back again, set your reel properly, fish on. Not been a problem for me after doing this.

I fix this by switching to another pole and then back.

Im starting to think this happens if you change the drag/speed while reeling in a fish, holding a fish or while casting.... i cant narrow it down to the exacts yet.

Wait, switching rods to fix??? Just mouse scroll back to what you want when it happens.

It happens with all gear and every location.

The bug (feature) can be recreated. Just need a fish to miss the hook when contacting the lure or bait.

Recreate with bait:
  1. Switch to a float rod
  2. Land a fish
  3. Cast
  4. Change reel speed
  5. Wait for nibble and watch reel speed reset to what it was before step 4

Harder to recreate with lure as luck is involved to have a fish fail at striking your lure while reeling it in at full speed. So lets increase our odds with a bad setup for testing purposes.
  1. Travel to Muddwater
  2. Set a #2 Jighead with your favorite 3" worm
  3. Cast
  4. Set reel speed to level 4
  5. Reel in
  6. If line speed resets to level 1, /goto 9
  7. Set reel speed to level 1
  8. /goto 3
  9. END
edit: gotta take some egg off my face now as i've just gone out and tested the above.

The lure test above does NOT work because a fish must be landed for the reset bug to start showing. Since it's near impossible to hook a fish with the jighead lure combo above it must be scratched cause it takes forever.

I was able to recreate the bug with regular fishing gear >>> After landing a fish, just start fishing with reel speed at level 4. When a strike fails to hook a fish the reel speed will reset to the last speed setting that successfully hooked a fish.

Well it can hardly be called a "feature" as no dev would create this as it is annoying as heck and as I said in my OP this only happened upon reeling back in it wasn't then, nor ever has happened to me with any gear when a fish strikes, misses or anything else. Who wants to reset their reel speed every single time they cast or switch rods? I have close to 300 hours in the game and it only happened to me and two others for a short one hour and it was annoying. Can't imagine a it being a constant thing.

I firmly believe it has something to do with tension and when they altered the rods/reels to make the fish fights more realistic and challenging. I think this because when it was happening to me I noticed some color in the tension bar would remain even after any tension what so ever was relieved.

I feel, not firmly, that it may be a poorly designed assist because it happens everytime at level 4 reel speed when receive a fish bite that does not hook. I hope, firmly, that it is a bug connected to the auto level 4 reel speed when fish is hooked.

Reel speed resets happen to me since cbt, map and gear doesnt matter. Its more obvious with bobber. Would be nice to see a fix some time.

Had to edit my earlier post after testing this bug for quite some time
