Look at what you will be fishing, lets say you want to go for unique largemouth, those will be around 8kg. I then pick a rod just above that, so ill go with a casting rod around 10kg. After that match a reel with the same drag as your rod. Lastly you want to get the most out of your reel, you want to use it on the best possible drag setting. So i pick line that is just above the weight my reel can handle, lets say 12kg line. That allows me to always fish at drag max-1.
The same holds for all types of fish, just remember to keep in mind what other species might take your bait. In michigan for example you might go for uni drum, but tiger muskie of 16kg could take your lure/bait :D
