The game starts in ubuntu but it is impossible to catch anything, there are no fishing rods and a bucket.

On 16.04 when using an older AMD card or APU (like the A10-6800K) with the default open source driver you may need to do the following if you get a blank screen when you start the game up:

1) right click on game in the library
2) Properties
3) Set Launch options
4) type "./FishingPlanet.x86_64 -screen-fullscreen 0 %command%"
