There is nothing to win.
Just go fishing and enjoy.

If you're impatient then there is a vast array of DLC to make life easier and progression far quicker. They are not necessary in order to play the game.
I used the Zabby starting guide and others like SooperDave for missions early on and blasted through the beginner game pretty quick. The only thing is that you miss out on just enjoying the fishing at various spots. I find fishing for trout at Rocky Lake great fun. It doesn't pay as much as Walleye at Emerald Lake, but it's far less predictable, at the cost of wearing beginner rods and reels out quicker.
I have no problem with people who want to buy DLC. It's a fast track in the game. If you really want to fish for big carp at WW or monster Nile Carp then you will have to buy the DLC unless you want to grind a silly number of hours just to get to that stage. If you can afford it and that's what you want to do then go for it. I'd research anything before buying tho, as with all F2P games it's easy to throw money down a hole for little return.
I bought the Congo dlc a week ago for two reasons: To help with the grind and in anticipation of the ocean location being the new top level - I want to be as close to the level to access it as possible.
