Bites, but can't set the hook

With a float, it's pretty easy to set when the bobber dips under water.
But with lures, I'm seemingly getting two different types of bite.
The first, it takes the lure and runs and it's set.
The second, the tension only goes up on the bars like 2 fingers worth or so. Like it has it in it's mouth, but if I keep reeling, or tap L2 to set, it just jerks it free.

I'm not sure what to do in that case. I've had it happen multiple times, now. But can't really find an explanation on what to do.

Shouldn't be the hook size. I'm using #3/0 rainbow spinner in Oregon, for trout, and caught plenty, but still seeing those little shots of something grabbing it only partially.

It is lure size/speed of retrieve. Bumps or partial takes is because the lure/presentation is too much for the current bite. A smaller lure or slower retrieve will provide more consistent hookups.

This sounds to me like you are getting snagged and jerking it free.

Try backing into hook set by pressing "S" key while raising rod tip. Sometimes light bites are from big fish and you have to get rid of slack line quickly.

To set the hook when this happens: stop reeling for 1/2 second, then reel for 1/2 second, then stop for 1/2 second etc. it should take just a couple of 1/2 second on / off cycles to get the fish to bite.

It doesn't work 100% but I land the fish quite often by doing this, say 60-70% of the time.

No, I know when the message pops about a snag.

This is literally a fish taking and swimming is, to the bars are up a bit dark blue, just a hair or two into the lighter blue bar, but never a more solid strike.

Thanks for the advice from everyone though, I'll give that a try when it happens again.

It's a new behavior fish presenting recently, they have no intention on taking your lure, just new addition to make game more enjoyable lol...
Same goes for carp in Willow and tigers in Congo, etc... Some think fish getting spooked, but whatever you call it that fish was never meant to be....

Not new at all. Been part of the game since I started playing in 2016.

Have you noticed how many times carp now comes and nibbles and not taking the bait, if you hold your rod in your hand you can see them spawning next to your hook and it keeps on going, but at the end some young carp will swallow #10/0 hook with biggest boilie lol

Also not new and why I have never completed level 3 of the Angling Machine achievement (30 successful catches in a row). Although it has gotten worse over the years.

The angling machine achievement can be easily done by doing the playing Santa's jukebox missions during the Christmas event.

I got it catching tigers with rod stand and floats with #4/0 hooks. Matter of fact got all them all 1, 2 and 3 achievements catching tigers.

If you lower your graphics settings and turn off water effects, then you might see that fish coming for your lure, usually they approach at great speed twice or more that you can catch, their approach is only to bump in to the lure without any intention of taking it, so they just bump and runaway.

same here my graphics are as low as they can get the game relies on really good internet if you have par or sub par it doesnt respond very well

It's been like that since Moses started playing the game. Now those of the fanboi clique will say its a game feature for immersion purposes . BS it's a broken game mechanic watch how fish take the lures esp on San Joaquin and Kaniq creek .

It's not small fish hitting lures too big for them it's blind fish with no mouths due to bad simulation programming . I have fished comps esp carp or float comps and watched 100 fish come and go and not take the bait including behemoth UNI's only for a 9lber to finally take up the gauntlet.

Pleasure fishing it's by the by and just aggravating esp listening to those darn bait alarms constantly bleeping all 4 taking turns but when every fish counts and time is of the essence it's unacceptable to have sturgeon roll over the bait because they are to dumb to open their mouths (broken mechanic) or fish not re-spawning (broken mechanic).

A bit of advice if you fish comps and I know for a fact this happens to everyone and if it doesn't then kudos to you Pinocchio . When you start you get video bombed with the comp is stating pop up and the fog horn then another one from your sports menu and then finally another from the enter comp join red buttons. This is a total balls up the times I have entered the lake and no fish are present nothing jumping nothing biting because the game has confused itself. ALL comps CTRL-ALT DEL out and restart the game . You can thank me later
