The barbless hooks in the game are purely for tournaments.
Main point IRL outside of tournaments is to cause least damage to fish in case of deep hooking. Using eg. barbed trebles for pike dead-baiting and waiting for second run is a bit off.
The second point is that it's easier to set hook while using barbless as you need less force to pierce (was about to use penetrate word) fish mouth.
In-game as other said, required for some competitions and that's it.
Can others confirm that barbless get fewer snags? I don't get that many snags so I've never noticed if there is an actual difference.
Every different option is just another "immersion" aspect to the game.
In real life, I once fished for trout at a pond, the city dumped in trout for the winter so people could catch, all the people I saw used the regular hooks (not barbless) and the trouts mouth would start bleeding a lot as soon as you pulled the hook out and they would be dead within 10 minutes or so.
most of the fishing here is catch and release ive never ever kept or killed a fish ive cought i use babrless rigs, crunch all the barbs on my lures use a unhooking mat and landing net and always have a tube of cliniqe in my tackle bag
