No barbs.

It's used in tournaments. I think it allows you to release a fish unharmed.

I dont see the purpose of barbless hooks in a game. It's artificiell fishes, and I really dont think they get harmed by being catched..

Barbless hooks in real life give the fish a chance to shed the hook easier and makes us concentrate more carefully on how we play a fish, as well as causing less damage. The only reason I can see them being in the game is either for a "sense of realism" or to drive us mad when fish escape.

I always use barbless hooks irl whether I'm course fishing or fly fishing. Although, the only time I used micro-barbed (whisker barbed) hooks is when I'm fishing with worm.

The barbless hooks in the game are purely for tournaments.

These are also used in IRL tournaments for quicker unhooking. Catching loads of small roach with barbed hooks would put you at huge disadvantage.

Main point IRL outside of tournaments is to cause least damage to fish in case of deep hooking. Using eg. barbed trebles for pike dead-baiting and waiting for second run is a bit off.
The second point is that it's easier to set hook while using barbless as you need less force to pierce (was about to use penetrate word) fish mouth.

In-game as other said, required for some competitions and that's it.

It's to make the game seem more real. But if that was truly the case, you wouldn't lose a fish to low line tension in .1 seconds because while reeling in a fish at a supposed 4, it's 1/10th the speed of when you reel in at a 4 without one.

Can others confirm that barbless get fewer snags? I don't get that many snags so I've never noticed if there is an actual difference.

Because it's a video game about fishing. Comps have stipulations, and barbless hooks adds another available stipulation.

Every different option is just another "immersion" aspect to the game.

Then why have a basket? You're not actually keeping them.

They have 2365 hours in game. Think they get the idea?

In real life, I once fished for trout at a pond, the city dumped in trout for the winter so people could catch, all the people I saw used the regular hooks (not barbless) and the trouts mouth would start bleeding a lot as soon as you pulled the hook out and they would be dead within 10 minutes or so.

You should never hunt or fish if you don't plan on keeping whatever you pull out of the water or shoot at. A good fisherman knows when they hurt a fish beyond the point of recovery. If they're gushing blood or you tear their lips, you might as well keep it and filet it.

no a good fisherman doesnt put so much stress on a fish that catching it kills it.
