I had left mouse button pushed for 40 minutes. I occasionally hit RMB and I occasionally pulled on the pole
I bet they actually have code that recognized how many hours that I have played and then gives me fish beyond my reach that so that my only choice is to stop playing or give them money.
I guess it serves me right. I have over 100 hours in this game and I have not given a dime.

It will help you select the correct balanced setup as well for most species it indicates max sizes for various locations.
As far as fight mechanics, keep the rod tip up (RMB) pretty much the entire time and only reel (LMB) when the pressure let's off. Reeling while the fish is pulling will just strip line faster.
By your own admission, " left mouse button pushed for 40 minutes" , your technique is suspect.
STOP reeling when the fish takes line.
