Similar to breathing, just makes life easier.

It allows you for precise placement time and time again. Let say your reel holds 100mtr of line, you can max trow it to 60mtrs out. Yet you got a spot closerby you want to fish on. For that first trow you get it on say 40mtr. You then clip the line, after clipping you will be able to hit that 40mtr spot time and time again.
I've never used it. I just use right mouse button to target where I want to cast. Do you need to unclip when you get a big fish on?

No, you do not need to unclip.

Clipping can also be used to tell you when you have a fish on the line. The clipped distance will change to total line length when a fish is on it. ex: 120/400=no fish, 400/400=fish.

Most spinning reels have a clip, like a plastic button, on the side of the spool to clip your line under so it will not unwind while not in use. You used to be able to press C to do this after you cast out so that you cast the same distance every time. for some reason it was defaulted to Middle Mouse Button, and removed from Bindings, so that now you keep unclipping your line while casting or worse still you keep bumping the MMB and slamming your sinker, or feeder, into your feet. To me using MMB to Move Forward was a far more practical option.

I prefer just to cast to the circle each time, I usually pick a marker on the far bank and just remember the distance. I find line clipping to imprecise.
