I mainly fish alone in a private room. What's the advantage to fishing in public rooms?
I guess the only thing I can think of is like in real fishing, in a public room you can see where everyone is fishing (The hot spots).

well in public people will help out the new people. but most hardcore competitive players play in private or friends only

I think the reason is if you like to chat with others while fishing.

IMO I'd find it distracting.

I find game lagging in public room so stay in private

just depends on personal preference. if im trying to grind ill usually play on private but if i feel like talking or have questions public rooms are pretty fun and can be helpful
I only switch to private if some rude person decides to set up right on top of me.

There is an option in settings to fix that.

Not a chatty player (omg please stop saying n1/nf) but always play in public to help out with questions here and there. Often the odd player will see how well I am doing compared to other and ask about what I'm using, best way to fish the spot, etc. No problem helping out.

I used to fish in public rooms all the time, but more recently it seems that there are more idiots about who insist on standing right in front of you because they think it's funny, so I've been using private rooms more. This is much less of a problem in the big fisheries like Amazonian Maze of course. Public rooms are often the best places to find the hotspots too - a gaggle of anglers in one spot can't all be wrong, though ironically that's when I often have to switch to a private room to fit in!

There is an toggle in the options for this, Player models in close range. This will hide anyone near you so they can't be in your way, it's quite funny when someone tries to be "funny" but that doesn't work and he can't figure out why.
Most high level players assume everyone hides the models in close range because it will be crowded at some places.

Also, the servers have been a bit slow recently so it can take a minute before another player shows up on your screen when you enter a new area so it might not be intentional.

Not if you have a rod stand out, every time you go to pick your rod all you get is their backsides so that toggle is pretty useless.

yep
I recently started playing the Windows version and the players on that platform do not seem to chat at all.

Another reason for me to stay in private is to many friend requests from low-levels. It's nothing wrong with this but all they ask about is my recipe and they want screenshots of them.

Most of players what you call Windows are using Xbox and typing messages using Xbox controller is not the same.

F2P games are often rife with riff raff. Yesterday in a public room a guy was offering sexual favors for donated money.
