Arapaima on steroids
Fishing Amazonian Maze, 31.5kg bottom setup. Bait gets taken by an arapaima the promply strips 110m of line. Four game hours later, I manage to get it to 25m when it decided to go for a run again, out to 85m. At this point the new leader (0.8, 32kg) was worn to breaking point and alt-F4 was my way out.

Anyone have a similar experience? Apart form fishing from a boat with the anchor up, any tips on managing a situation like this?

Yes you must have your drag set to max, it's only way.
LaCazadora 340, Torbellino 11000, 34.8kg line, 36kg lead, set drag to max...
SpellLauncher 350, Selva Star 6000, 31.5kg line, 32kg lead set drag to max

I had the same experience twice, both times I managed to land Uni's. I got them to 45 foot from the bank then they run to 300+ foot. I also noticed the rod tips were bouncing up and down like they were having a seizure. Got the fish to within 280 feet and then I could not get the line in below the 280' for ages. Eventually they came to the bank 345 pounds and 347 pounds. I had the set up that Sup_DiMON has mentioned above. The only good thing is when it happens you know you have a Uni on the line.

How much $$ do those give?

Arapaima is not on steroids, you just experienced FP rod nerfing, and what I suggested is just work around it

Thank you all for the input.

Surely if you set you drag to max then your line will just break?

Depending on your setup, yes. But in the example given in top of this thread, no.
As long as your output dragforce is less or equal to the weakest part in your setup, it will not break, be it max drag or not.

Sounds risky. Every time I accidentally go to max drag the line goes twang! Also it's presuming both your main line and leader are new and not worn...

Not risky at all, and it doesnt matter if its new or worn, a line/leader wont break until it reaches 0% and until then it will work the same as a new one.
Only thing that matters is to not exceed the output dragforce above the weakest link in the setup.

*edit: If your leader or line breaks when you go to max drag, it means your reels max drag is greater than max test on your line or leader.

For instance, if reel is max drag 25kg and line or leader is 24.99kg, they will break. If they are 25kg they will not break.

So you're saying that a 370 Ib fish won't break a 70 lb setup or something? Sounds crazy regardless of reel drag etc. Try that in real life and see how you get on. Sounds bizarre and if true then it's a bug in the game. Max drag should only work on a fish near the max breaking strain of the line. I've had a 9 Ib tench on 6 Ib line for example and stopped it running into weed.
I've fished for 40 years and that's how it should be. IRL. Though you might get away with it if the fish is tired.
Try stopping a 370 Ib Arapaima with 70 Ib line when it's running and there should only be one outcome, which is why Marlin fights take so long. Nobody in their right mind would fight a Marlin on max drag.
The OP's leader broke and he was using the drag....

You do it your way and I'll do it mine. To suggest the OP should go and fish max drag next time he hooks a Uni Arapaima is not very helpful imo.

Jeez, chill..
Im only telling you how it works in the game.
And it the game it works like that, as long as the output drag is equal or less than the weakest part in the setup, it wont break.
That said, having too weak setup overall for a big fish, will risk getting spooled. And that will also break either line/leader/rod in your setup, but that has nothing to do with the drag vs line/leader to do, but more to not enough dragforce for the fish.

I'm just debating with you why are you saying chill?? You're being too defensive about the whole thing imo.
If you want to bust your reel or snap your leader then fine, but it's not good advice to give other people who might not understand the potential trap. It's also not the way the game is intended to be played and I don't believe it's the way to go on big fish waterways, but that's just my opinion and I'm entitled to it.
Have a good day.

Btw, I wasnt suggesting him anything, i simply answered your question, and if it was risky or not.
Yes, you do it your way. Everyone is free to fish the way they like.
In Op's case tho, if he were using a selva star 6000 (as suggested earlier in thread), inncreasing from second highest drag to max drag would mean a 3.75kg increase in dragforce, and most likely get the fish in before the leader had worn out.

*edit: wether you like it or not, its how they have made the game. Its programed this way and therefor risk free, if you do the calculations no lines or leaders will "snap".
