Fishing for trout with soft baits
I entered the trout competition today where you had to fish for trout with a barbless jig head. So I purchased a 1/2 oz #2/0 and 3/4 #3/0 jig head an assortment of grubs and went fishing. It seemed impossible to even get a bite. The rainbows didn't seem interested, I caught a few cutthroat but that was about it. Any idea what to use to catch these fish? I am practicing as we speak but the soft baits don't seem to be working too well, I want to enter the competition again in the future but at this point it doesn't seem like its worth it.

You want a jighead generally #2 - 1/0 size range for that comp.
5g to 9g 1/0, dark green grub 5cm or 7cm, yellow grubs same size also very good log bridge spot, cast in middle and near edge toward open water in that channel part, prima speed 2 or 1, reel and jump up high. Is how i fish the comp for cutthroats in that comp and normally do pretty well.

Hope things improve for you mate.

I just started fishing Colorado and I've been toying with different jigs also. Seems everyone advocates spinners for trout, but I've caught bigger trout with a jig.

I start with the 1/4oz #2/0 head. I've been trying both grub and shad (no worms yet) and I've had mixed results on both, although I think grubs have been better. I've only got the yellow and the green and can't decide which is better, if either. I fish it same as the others, a stop and go, often letting it rest for second. I've caught some of my best fish on the jig, it just seems very inconsistent for me so far, although that could just be inexperience and my needing to learn when to use them.

I tried this the other day, a 3" green grub or it's 2" version work wonders with a #2/0 hook. Amber work moderately well. Use lift and drop, haven't had much luck on stop n go

So I decided to give it a go. Oddly enough it seemed constant 2 speed reel and twitching at mid to high depth was the only thing that was producing trout. Usually I had to fish off the bottom with stop and go or lift and drop but today twitching higher up was working. Odd.

Trout are odd, you have to put the lure infront of them sometimes for anything to work

Just my 2 cents as a less than a month player, Today I went to Oregon for the first time, but I saw your thread here, and while preparing for that location (me beeing lvl16) I went through the full soft baits list I could newly buy...

Now while shopping for soft baits... Nymphes (I put my game in english and got the same name as in french, so i guess it's the correct one for you too) are having trouts going for them, while grubs have nearely no infos as what they are good at... I know I did catch bass and pickerels with them... but did not try grubs on trouts...
So knowing I was going for trouts and bass, I did shop the full nymphes, newts, crawfish and crustaceans... (last 3 obviously for rocky and smallmouth bass)

Honnestly I had tons of success with spoons with trouts at Colorado, so it did not even cross my mind to try softbaits for them...
So here I am, early morning sunny day not even knowing the place and casting my very first spoon at *the wooden bridge* location, casting on the leaving river side, not even knowing if there was anything here (did not do any homeworks for that place, so nearely know nothing about it). Got me a cutthroat at first cast... so I know there is something...

Second cast I try my luck with a strawberry nymphes 5cm on a 1/0 5gr hook... lift&drop... pretty badly executed... second cutthroat trout... so if you are not having much luck with your grubs... maybe grab nymphes for better results. Specially as they do come in multiple colors to probably better suit the weather you get.

EDIT : a screenshot for what I got from 5am to 7h30 am in game time

EDIT 2 : yep definitely getting trouts interrest with those...
Nice to know a good viable 5gr alternate to fish for trouts, as the spinning spoons 4gr 1/0 need lighter rods (gold rods for longer casts and the non gold ones are too short)

Thanks for all the info. I appreciate you taking the time to test it out and report back :)

Actually I'll come back with more of my own testing results, as it seems mid lake I had pretty bad results with those... but great results in the small area of the running water place... those were really my very first testing and it seems I actually had the begginer's luck at the only place I could make them work :steamhappy:

Thanks for the info, I'll certainly give it a go when I next go trout fishing. But you say the gold rods give you longer casts, is that true? Is it simply because they are gold?

Better gear is just available at a lower level with some of the gold purchased gear. Overall, once you can access all gear the only gold rod that out-performs as far as casting distance is the Nero 14'10"/450.

No, what I was meaning Bahnzo, if you go the "usual" way of fishing trouts, many vids go for the 1/0 spinners... and that is a 4 grams (1/8 oz.)... then at "early" lvls (or even at any lvls that is...if I'm not mistaken), the only rod that is long enough to let you cast far with that spinner is the Aurora 2.50m (8'2'') (gold rod)
So any rods that would require a 5gr (1/6oz.) is a lost cause with those, if you need distance, as you only could use the Elemental 2.10m (6'10) (normal in game currency)

So as you can see, the leverage differencial in lenght is a substancial one
So you have more choices within the 5gr (1/6oz.) or + rods

Well final answer to Jumbie...
I was trying a variety af plastic lures... and honnestly I had quite some... unexpected results...
I let you go investigate on my profile pics... and I also have to mention that I got most of my catches with those plastic "weird" lures at locations... so it's pretty much trial and errors... and that what's make the game fun to me. But probably also all the already good locations you have with the usual spoon fishing.
