In your inventory screen, below where it shows all the items you're currently carrying, there should be a series of icons with X/Y next to them. X represents how many items of that type you are currently carrying, Y represents the total number you are capable of carrying.
Let me know if that clears things up or if you still have more questions.
Then start with equipping yourself drag your hat, vest, tackle box, rod case and net to the appropriate slots from your home tab.
Next put together the rod/s you want to fish with on your next trip.
Finally start moving additional things you think might be needed or useful to your backpack, whatever baits you might plan to use, different lures, extra line, hooks, floats etc.
As Maj. Tryhard said watch the numbers at bottom of your backpack tab to see how much space you have available so you start to get an idea of what you can fit a bit of extra non essential but potentially useful things in and what you need to make sure your taking only the essentials due too space constraints.
If your planning to float or bottom fish make sure you have your baits and appropriate terminal tackle first before packing in a bunch of other things. If spinning/casting is your main focus for a trip get a good selection of lures packed first before filling up with non essential goodies.
As you level up you'll be able to purchase better vests, tackle boxes, rod cases etc. which will allow you to be less focused in what you carry in your backpack as you'll have more room for stuff, but it can still be useful to periodically clear everything out and repack. I do that and find things I've been carrying around for some time but never used so they stay home while some stuff at home catches my eye and gets tossed in for me to try on next expedition.
Sinkers are only able to be used with feeder or bottom rods. They can't be used on a float setup (telescopic or match rods.)
Also, if you get into lure fishing, don't bother with casting rods or reels for now. Spinning rods can typically do the job better, especially at lower levels.
