Bottom fishing pike HELP
Hey guys,

I am farming now on michigan pikes and i would like to ask you couple of things.
Is someone farming pikes there close to reeds with 4 rods same time and also have problem that bait will get stuck almost every single time and you need to keep recasting it?
I dont know whats wrong i am using leader 100cm on bottom rods but they keep getting stuck, how to avoid that?Is there any solution?
How does leader on bottom fishing works? If you using 30cm depth on pike with floating you need to have same 30cm on bottom fishing leader? Thanks for help!

PS : Makes me not happy loosing 100 shiners daily on lily when it gets stuck :(

try not casting so close to the lillys.im guessing your geting constant snags cos your casting directly into the lillys.
i use aprox 50cm leader if that helps at all

its not about lillys, iam keep getting stucked shiner even i throw it on 20-25 m.
I have 3 unique markers and spots for pikes which works perfectly with floating but when i am using bottom rods its always stucking on ground, same like on alberta when you are spinning.
I just dont know solution to avoid it,does 50cm works without problems for you on pike?

A few of my pike spots in MI are not usable with bottom fishing because of snagging, so I had to go through all my spots until I found a few places that don't have so much snagging problems. IMO, you are losing entirely too many bait to this and it makes me wonder if you're doing something wrong. I get virtually no snags and even in my snagging spots it was only 1 of 10 at worst.

I think I use a 40in leader.

well i am just mad because i have 3 unique spots and daily taking out on same 4 rod casts 4 uniques same time.Well i lost like 200 shiners but from other side,on bottom daily on sunny days got 8 unique and 8 trophy + pikes and mix/cloudy 6 uniques minimum on pikes but those snags :(
Did you find new unique spot on other place then the one everyone using close to reeds?
If i am casting 20+ metters,it doesnt stuck and not snagging, but 14-18m snagging,i might have to go back on kayak fishing, first time i been on kayak 79 days on MI but if i had 2 unique daily i was lucky, there is always + and - on bottom.

The reason is simple your float fishing rig is hovering just above the weed line and snags, branches, logs plant roots etc. So unless a fish takes you in closer which does happen and your float disappears altogether (most annoying) your normally good to go and can fish without any hassle. Fishing on the bottom you lose the ability to keep your bait above the crap that is on the bottom which can be anywhere on a lake . Leads sink in to the mud and your leader and bait will be caught up in it as well. Rule of thumb closer you are to weeds shorter the leader should be. No good casting 2 foot from the reeds with an 8 foot leader following behind.

I never use more than 36 inches 90cm and if close on weed beds or the reeds i use 30-45 cm max. Leader distance is less important with bottom fishing with lead weights (sinkers). It really only applies to feeder fishing you want your hook bait near where your feeder bait lands or the fish will be over your ground bait but not on your hook bait if it is 250cm away. But with the simplest fishing mechanics in place in this game I very much doubt they have programmed any distance response to feeder fishing. so yeah just keep it short when you fish close to the bankside :)

Fishing in that reed bed on michigan you could try this as it is what i do. cast out about 30 meters 99 feet and then reel it back to 10 meters. it doesn't snag up your sinker of hook bait. Possiblr because some of the debris there is midwater? give it a whirl :)

The simple solution is to use float rigs on your rod stand, but you will need a stand with alarms

Bottom fish there quite often for Pike but use the other bank and cast towards the lily pads where the Pikes are.

I aim for the nearest corner just slightly past the edge of the pads and time my power meter to release just before centre and it normally lands bang on the edge where the Uni's spawn, with practice you will get it spot on 99% of the time, around 175 feet, I can now get it spot on even when a Kayak is blocking line of sight, normal rig set-up is two rods with a 4/0 on one rod and a 6/0 on the other or both with 6/0, shiners, 4 1/2 oz to 6 oz lead, line 33lb, leader to match, leader length 50 to 55 inches but have had loads on a shorter leader, average about two to three Uni's per sitting and many trophies, even get the odd Muskie as well.

PS Forgot to mention that I do not use a feeder on my rigs when going for the Pikes.
