I had lots of missed hits by bass in mud water, but almost never in Florida. It was poppers in both places.
Since a walker is always being reeled in, there is literally no need to “set the hook”; the hit itself combined with the tension of the constant retrieve action, should do it.
I actually know a guy who says he pauses while using a walker. Says he gets most of his hits while paused, as well. I never could master the pausing technique, myself.
And what thit you mean with pauses? I reel in until the line is tense and then I click right button all the way up and reel in again until the line is tense. I repeat this until the line is in or I got a fish on the hook.
Apparently he pauses after every zig-zag or two, letting the lure stop moving for a moment.
Personally, I reel the entire time, clicking the right mouse whenever the lure stops zagging. I typically use reel-speed 2 or 3, as it seems you get more left/right when the frog is moving faster. It worked really well in Florida, though at speed 3 (with some rods) bowfin and gar can have trouble catching the lure.
