At Alaska when fishing in a kayak, I've had a lot of times where the fish is 30-50 feet from the boat and I cannot get it any closer unless I pump the rod up and down. Maybe a glitch?
But yeah sometimes I can have some fun battles with fish. For me mostly bass at Neherin when I was lower level, and more recently with Salmon.
There is NO kayak fishing at Alaska location. This statement makes your post totally irrelevant.
I find that if a fish is fighting really strong and just keeps taking your line its best to stop reeling and keep the line tight , pause for a bit then try reeling in some more , rinse and repeat and i guarentee u will land that fish , ive landed lots of fish that weigh double the size that line can take using this method with no problem , can take a while though , half hour to land a big pike or trout is actually quite relistic
I think he's talking about Alberta. I've had similar experiences. I'm not sure if it's a glitch or not, fighting big fish in deep water is usually more difficult in reality. It gives them a lot more room to play with, down where you have less control over them.
I fought a laker on super light gear the other day for half an hour. I started with my reel at about 30% and I managed to pull it in when the reel was down to 2%. Totally worth it. For a while though, it was hugging the bottom and my rod just didn't have enough power to get it off.
The reason I'm not sure it's a bug is cause it's not an unsolvable problem. It seems to only happen to me when I'm using gear that's close to the weight of the fish or lighter. So, like Satanist said, you have to lift the rod a little and drop it and reel before the fish can take the line back. Once again, similar to how you might try to fight a big fish up away from the bottom. I think if it was a glitch, the fish would be either immoble, or it would eventually 'wake up' and take off again. I've always interepreted it as the fish getting too tired to run away, but not tired enough for my rod to pull straight in.
Not complaining
Some of these fat cat fish with my set up are seeming impossible to pull
And have you tried inching them up? Small lift, short reel, gain a foot or two at a time, ideally.
manage to pull out from 94m, Uni Muskie 27kg
worth 1/2h irl fight
EDIT: I had a look and the biggest fish I caught was 43kg Gar , I don't recall exactly what I was using , but I remember 16kg line. So the drag would have been a little less than that. So there goes the 50% theory out the window.
