Newbie Shopping List
I started playing this game with a friend a few days ago with a friend. My friend is struggling a little bit with some of the concepts and terms, as he is not an avid fisherman in real life. I compiled a list of helpful gear to buy for him and though maybe others could benefit from my recommendations as well.

The starter gear should get you to level 3 without issue.

Level 3: hooks #4 $60

Level 3: hobby gear (can carry extra rod and reel) $1000

Level 3: valuespin 6'3" rod $1250

Level 3: chubby bobber (get 2) $50 each

Level 3: cheese (bait) $60

Level 3: mini bass jig 1/3oz #2 watermelon -- 1 bait coin

Level 4: hooks #1 $140

Level 4: inspirecast 2000 reel (buy two) $850 each

Level 4 : fish hut M (can keep more fish) $640

Level 4: mono .007" 500 yards (3lb test line) $260

Level 4: grasshoppers (bait) $140

Level 5: casting spoon 1/4oz #1/0 yellow and red rombs (5 diamonds pattern) -- 2 bait coins

Level 6: casting spoon 1/4oz (silver) $170

Level 5: easy go belt pocket (can carry extra tackle/lines) $250

Level 7: mono .008" 500 yards (4lb test line) $315

Level 7: small minnows (bait) $300

Level 7: shad lure white glow (night fishing) 2" $100

Level 7: hooks #1/0 $140

Level 8 : fish hut L (can keep more fish, sell the fishhut M) $2000

Level 8: flies (bait) $180

Level 8: spinner lure 1/8 oz (beetle or rainbow) 3 bait coins

Level 8: comfort camper vest (can carry extra tackle/lines) $850

Level 9: crickets (bait) $200

Level 10: hooks size 2/0 $150

Level 11: 3 inch grub in amber $150 and 1/6oz jighead #1 $40

Total: $10195 and 6 bait coins

This might sound like a lot but you will be earning money by keeping fish, that in combination with the starter allowance you should still have enough ingame money to explore other states/lakes. There are also rewards for logging in multiple days in a row as a source of income.

Can I also add if you enjoy the game maybe buy some of the cheaper dlc, some of the stuff is very very handy.

The sport packs are very good value.

Wait, those are RL prices or in game?

Edit: saw "bait coins" and figured it out.

Game caught my eye, but can you play it without investing 500+ $ in it?

You can play it for free. And if you want a boost you can buy DLC and that is totally your own choice

Anything locked behind purchase? Saw a pretty big DLC list so I am generaly curious if I would be locked out without buying those.

Is there recomended cheap-ish start pack just to show a few dollar support at the devs in case that previous concernes are negative and I get hooked (pun intended)?

The game is Free to Play !
It is YOUR choice to spend real money.
However, there is nothing to win, it is a game of leisure and relaxation.
Take some time to enjoy the game and GL.

A lot of new players will purchase the Sport pack DLC it has some good gear you'll be able to use through out your experience. The sport pack is a bundled pack on Steam Fishing Planet store page.

I got the Lucky and the sports packs on m Wishlist. I do however wait for a sale as the DLC's were in decent discount a while back so its due for another if the devs are smart

Good luck to you too! I was trying to play without spending money and ended up buying the pro angler DLC a couple days ago, mostly for the Heavy Fishing pack it includes. The heavy one has a keep net (allows you to keep fish so you can sell them after the trip for xp and ingame cash). That net is worth the 5 bucks easily, it allows you to keep fish up to 66lbs and a total weight of about 150lbs per trip. The bundle I got was 20 dollars, it includes: 5 other packs of rods and reels, a 5 rod/reel case (allows you to bring 5 setups with you to lakes), and a big tackle box/vest that allows you to hold 76 items in your backpack.

Probably overkill but I always feel like I am forgetting that one lucky lure that I left at home so I like a huge carrying capacity. I am the same way IRL, I bring about 10lbs of hooks, weights, and lures with me whenever I fish and end up only using 1-3 lures usually haha

Lol, that is the way it usually goes. Bring full trunk of rods, forget the thing you will need the most or use none but one.

Tried the game for a bit and I like what I see for now, specially after long day.

It is quite relaxing and I am also very interested in leveling and competitions. I made a separate account so I could fish multiple lakes without having to leave one I invested in. I tried an amatuer catfish tournament on my newer account and placed 3rd! I was stoked!

I am a little frustrated targeting big fish as they are few and far between (which is good really), but it is super fun to rake in bluegill for a couple hours as well.

Well, catching big ones all the time would diminish the satisfaction.

I am figuring stuff out for now and not overcasting to other lakes or competition just yet.

Also, I didn't (couldn't cram it in to budget to be honest) get the bundle atm, so I will avoid tournaments for now.

very true, i am glad the big ones require a lot of patience and effort. The bundle is by no means required, I actually caught my biggest fish (14lb catfish :)) before I spent any real money on the game. Having trouble getting anything over 7lbs since I bought the pack actually! I am sure the weight of fish caught and money spent are unrelated, I am glad it's not a "pay to win" game

I had nice success and finished days pretty satisfied with basic equipment on Lone Star lake too, despite being brand new with starting equipment and no bonuses.

Yes, pay to win and excessive microtransactions are traps many "free to play" games fell in to.

On the other hands, we all got to eat, so do the devs thus I have nothing against getting a thing or two from the shop and urge people to do the same for every game they like.

Just to keep the lights and servers on.
