Rods for large fish when using bait

Im so used to lure fishing I barely fish with bait. At Michigan I thing I got a bite from the Blue catfish. I new my rod at that stage was way too weak yet I still tried to fight it. But after 10m of struggle I decided to cut the line. What do I need to look at when I want to catch the large fish such as blue catfish with bait and not with lures? I'l check the rod later to confirm what I do have. At Oregan now. lol

If you are fishing peak time and hook a Trophy 'blue", I would recommend a Brutus, other wise a Fenix will do the job.

ok but do I look at line weight on the rod's description or how regardless of the brand of the rod? Just want to get a more or less idea. Rod needs to be strongest then reel and lastly the line self from what I learned.

First decide what line you want to use, then pick a reel thats drag can best be set up for that line. then pick a rod that best suits your need, and will handle your line.longer rods cast further.
Make sure the rod is right for the wieght of the lure. if you put on a lure too heavy for the rod,I guarantee it will break. And what ever a reel says its maximun drag setting is it can't be used, Drags set to maximun will break the line and maybe the reel.
Check the link to Uber Sheets in pinned discussions. There you will find the best reel for your line.Also the drag position you need to look for needs to be over a half pound less then your line. So in other words if you're looking for a reel for 10lb line,you need to find one you can set at 9.25 lbs

Brutus 9' 10" or 10' 10" with a Double Punch 6500 or Thunderspin reel. Either or will bring in a 70 lb gar without a problem.
