What is the use of multiple day trips in game?

Right now I have a 15lb net - If I plan a 3 day trip - I fill up my net in 2 hours haha. The only way to empty the net that I am aware of is to leave and go to the global map and sell. Then my trip is done. Am I missing something?

So the rule of thumb is only purchase the trip for 1 day as you can always extend it once there.

You don't actually leave, instead you press [T] and speed up time to the next day 5am and it will ask if you wish to "extend" or "leave", which by extending is much cheaper than leaving and coming back.

When you extend - can you sell of your catch to start your net empty?

Ahh ok that makes sense. I'm new and I am grinding to level 10 right now .. almost there. Will be there in another hour or so. I actually dont mind grinding in this game ... it really is an outstanding game but from what I can tell you just have to work around the pricing scheme.

Mis-information sorta, you don't NEED baitcoins to change days, only if you do so rapidly as long as you forward your day, fish long enough to get past the cool down, then you can forward your days again. If you fill up your net before the cooldown is done, you have to wait again before you can forward again.

Just worded a bit differently chey is right it will slow you down if you don't want to spend bait coins.
