Basic Steam Installation Troubleshooting:
Many basic installation issues or problems can be resolved with this helpful info - https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3219-TDFN-7795

I've Installed SONAR, inserted a plug-in, and I recieve an Error (Code=1):
Error Code 1 means registry entries for the game launcher is missing.

First please review this link with 3rd party software that may interfere with Steam and installing applications through it: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289

Many times the error is resolved when the offending application is disabled or uninstalled in extreme cases, and then by Verifying the SONAR Application Cache.

  • Right-Click on 'SONAR'
  • Go to Properties
  • Go to the Local Data tab
  • Click on 'Verify Application Data'
  • When this is done re-launch the application.

Some of my Plug-ins don't show up after installation.
Make sure that you have no pending Windows Updates and your computer does not need to be restarted to complete them. After this is finished, verify the Steam Cache for SONAR then launch again.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Cannot Open Master.INS" Error on Launch:
This can be corrected by holding down the CONTROL + SHIFT keys on your keyboard when launching SONAR. This should prompt you with a message that says "SONAR will now personalize your user settings...". Make sure to click [OK] to this message.

My 3rd Party VST's don't show up:
Make sure the VST Scanner has been pointed to the correct path - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=205131031
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My 3rd Party VST locks up the application when I try to insert it or when it is scanned:
There are many small VST developers and VST's that haven't been updated in long time. With the implimentation of the new UAC controls in Win Vist, 7, and 7 some legacy plugins have issues with hosts. Other times the developer has implemented the VST spec differently than many commercial developers.

In most cases this is resolved by running Steam and SONAR as an administrator. Please review this Valve guide on doing that - https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5688-ifhz-2170

Can I install MC6T and SONAR X3 along with SONAR?
Yes, but with one caveat. Make sure Music Creator 6 Touch and SONAR X3 are installed first, before installing SONAR.

SONAR updates some shared utilities. When MC6T is installed after SONAR you can overwrite the newer dependencies with older ones.

If you happen to install MC6T after SONAR, make sure to re-verify application-cache on your SONAR installation.

The Application is freezing when I click the record button:
This is an indicator that something is blocking SONAR from accessing your sound hardware.

First make sure your audio hardware is configured correctly, please refer to this guide for initial setup - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=205132528#195727
If another application is trying to access your sound device you may ultimately want to turn it off while recording. The following may also help you with the issue.
  • Go to Edit > Preferences
  • Set it to Advanced via the toggle on the bottom of the window.
  • Under Audio > Advanced, make sure 'Share drivers with other programs' is checked
  • Click [OK] and test
Also, If you are using a USB interface make sure you are using the correct port. Many USB 1.0 and 2.0 audio devices have issues when plugged into a USB 3.0 port. Moving them to a USB 2.0 port resolves these issues in most cases.

Rewire x64/x86 Issues? [Instructions for Resolution]

Some Windows configurations can prevent proper registration of our ReWire dependency. Please proceed with the following instructions if you are missing x86 or x64 ReWire devices and/or the ReWire option is grayed out.

1. Close SONAR
2. Now open up a command window with administrator rights.
Windows 7: Type CMD in the start search. Right click on cmd.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

Windows 8: Open up Metro, type CMD, rightclick on Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator' at the bottom of the screen.

[For a x64 fix]
5a. In the prompt type "cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Cakewalk\x64\Shared Plugins\" without quotes and press [Enter].

[For a x86 fix]
5b. In the prompt type "cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Cakewalk\Shared Plugins\" without quotes and press [Enter].

Note: If your STEAM directory is not on C: or in a different path you'll need to change those paths accordingly.

6. Your prompt should now read that you're in the above directory.
7. Next type "Regsvr32 DeWire.dll" without the quotes and press [Enter].
8. You should receive a message stating that the .dll was registered successfully.

At this point please Re-Open SONAR and your ReWire client(s) should be available!

If you're still having issues, you may need to run STEAM and/or SONAR as Administrator. More information on this topic can be found here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5688-ifhz-2170

Control Surface Problems in x64?[Instructions for Resolution]

Is your control surface name in brackets? This happens in certain conditions with how the Control Surface files get registered within Windows. We haven't nailed the exact reason that causes it, but we do have a solution. It just takes a few easy steps.

1. Close SONAR
2. On your system go to 'C:\Users\[Your Windows user name]\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR' (or producer/studio)
3. Delete the file called ctrlsurface.dat
5. In the prompt type "cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Cakewalk\x64\Shared Surfaces" and/or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Cakewalk\Shared Surfaces" without quotes and press [Enter].
Note: If your STEAM directory is not on C: or in a different path you'll need to change that accordingly.
6. Your prompt should now read that you're in the above directory.
7. Next type "Regsvr32 ACTController.dll" without the quotes and press [Enter].
8. You should receive a message stating that the .dll was registered successfully.
9. Repeat this for any of the other control surface .dll files you need to utilize and are having issues with.

Now you should be able to go back into SONAR x64 and the ACT control surface will keep your MIDI port assignments. If you have any issues with following along, please contact our phone support reps and they can walk you through this.

Note: We've used ACTController.dll as an example, but you can apply these instructions to any .dll file in those 2 different control surface folders.

Is there Workshop Support?:
Not at this time but we are currently looking at ways to implement it.

Can I import a Cakewalk Software project from an older version?
Your old CWB, CWP, and WRK files should open successfully within SONAR. There are also a couple of ways to recover the files incase they don't open correctly.

One trick is to hold the [Shift] key while clicking 'load' on a project.

The other is to drag an old project file from within SONAR's Browser, into a blank project.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Visual Playback is Choppy:
If the audio sounds fine, but the UI freezes up and jumps by increments of 1 second rather than transitioning smoothly you may have accidentally set SONAR to the low-resource setting. This is feature that slows the GUI to free up resources so an intense mix can still play back.

It's toggled on/off with the PAUSE key.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will I need to install the SONAR patches from Cakewalk's website?
No, Steam installations will automatically be updated to the latest point release when available.
