After that, don't use any of the PS4 mapping apps (like DS4Windows).. Just configure the controller naturally inside PC2.
Plenty of people have used controllers (Xbox and PS4) on the PC with this title. What issue you are having, is on your side.

You can always test with the demo that is available.
You got that backwards for this situation.
MS Windows OS does not offer native support for Sony controllers. You will need an app/driver to work as an emulator of an Xbox device for it to work with most PC games.
Your Steam Client offers a controller interface that might work with most games, it can also cause problems if you are using another driver/app/emulator for your device. With Steam open, look at the top for Settings/Controller/General Controller Settings.
There is a switch to turn these settings on/off for each game. Right click on the game in steam library and choose properties. "Steam Input Per-Game Setting" ; “Use your Global Steam Input" for on, "Force Off" to disable. You may need Force Off with other emulators in use.
Some have reported this setting can change on its own when Steam client updates.
Other popular emulator apps; DS4 Windows, e360ce and others that convert controller inputs to key board commands, Joy2Key, expadder, inputmaper.......
Other's have solved there issue. If the demo worked fine, it's the same code for the full version. FWIW, the "Steam Controller" options tend to get changed/reset with some updates. Likely, what make the demo work for you a while back has been reset. Either way, the issue is on your end. However, I gain nothing whether you buy it or not so whatever floats your boat. Probably not a good title for you anyway.
You should have tried Steam Bigpicture instead.
In case it is not an original PS3/4 or XBOX controller, you hsould use a program to make sure it works perfectly fine and is perfectly identified by Steam (and even with it, Steram updates may screw and you have to make it work through Steam Bigpicture).
If it dont anymore, it is a Steam update problem, not a game problem.
Anyway, believe me, simulators (not NFS or GRID, try Project Cars 1 or Sebastian Loeb for some approach to sim or Dirt Rally as more serious as sim, these not only have better physics than GRID and NFS but also deliver better FFB) are another universe of experience with a basic FFB wheel.
Whenever you can, get a wheel, it will not dissapoint you (in terms of experience, just remember the arcade games not only dont have proper physics but they also dont deliver FFB at all or dont deliver properFFB).
PC1 and PC2 are well designed to work better for controllers because of how tweaked the game is towards making the player life less hard and more possible to handle driving with more speed.
Again, in case you are having problems, try Steam Bigpicture (or if it is not an original PS or XBOX controller, try an app to make it being properly recognized).
PC2 actually use manufacturer software to run the devices (like the wheel that require the Logitech drivers and software for the game to run, or else the game wont recognize the wheel or will recognize it as a controller and the FFB the game will convey, along with the inputs you do with the wheel, will be crap) so probably it do the same with controllers (btw, I have PS4 controller installed and never needed anything installed to make the controller work at PC1 and PC2).
