If your start looks like this and you start on the O and have the quests mostly spawn on the Y you are in very rough shape:
XXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXY
XWWWWWWWWW
XXXXXXXXXXXO
What makes it really frustrating is when you have to guess whether the map looks like this, with the path on the left:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXWXXXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXXXWXXXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXXXWXXXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXXXWXXXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXYXWXXXXXXXX
XWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWX
XXXXXXXXXXXOXXXXXXXXXX
Or like this, with the path on the right:
XXXXXWXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXXXWXXXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXXXWXXXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXXXWXXXXXXXX
XXXXXWXXXXXYXWXXXXXXXX
XWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWX
XXXXXXXXXXXOXXXXXXXXXX
Because there's a 50-50 chance you'll spend a whole lot of turns walking only to find a dead end that you then have to walk all the way back from.
The "problem" is that it can turn a game from trivial to imossible because the quest victory is so easy compared to the rest of the game. Not being able to progress the main quest is a death sentance on the higher levels. It removes some fun when 80% of the difficulty of a game is where the quest spawns end up.
