Do you mean wounds or curses because it's two different things in the game. Wounds are healed by Healer hut faster (not always btw, it depend on the mood of the healer ;-) and wounds cure themself by camping and have enough fuel and food with you. Also a medic is important in a group it can prevent your other characters to die from wounds. Curses can be cured by special places but it's more difficult you have to read the stories about it and do some challenges.
Also if you see sickness in the character stats are you sure your character is sick because some have a sickness skill and do damage with it in particular fights. If you mouse over you see what it does.
I think the draft is totally random. You can reshuffle before comabt if you have that option on. Also you can equip your healer with some weapon to make him usefull in a fight. Also you can use him with other skills just as back up in your other hand. If he is choosen many times you have just some bad luck but that means that in your other hand you have your fighters and you can use them to shield your healer. So there are multiple ways to win those fights and even with a bad handdraw you have plenty of change to win.
