This is not a 4X game, there's eXplore, there's eXploit, there's no eXpand, and eXterminate is optional.
The RPG components are very good. If you've ever played King of Dragon Pass (get it in GOG, don't get the sucky version from Steam) you'll feel more at home in Thea.
It's a really good game, I recommend it fully. This is not just any Indie game, this is a great game made by a very dedicated group of 4 developers, they're not cashing in and abandoning their game, they're here for the long run.
Fully recommended!
Of course the lore provides a different atmosphere compared to these games and the game is strongly driven by random and not so random questevents providing you with extra benefits based on your choices.
In fact the good thing about this game is that based on your playstyle you can approach things differently, focus on research and gathering and this plays more like a building game, focus on quests and ,monster rewards and this plays more like an roguelike rpg.
I like this game but you need to be open to try out new stuff for it.
Personally I say watch atleast one youtuber play this game to get an impression of its mechanics then decide.
As far as the gameplay goes - the in-game tutorial was pretty weak, but there are videos (lots of videos not all of them good) - but there *is* also an in-game glossary that looks pretty up to par.
There's customizable preferences for difficulty - not just "easy, normal, hard, nasty" or the equivalent, but different settings for a number of different things, each of which affect the experience you gain. It's not like Civilization's map generation either, there are distinct differences in each of the selections, and the selections are meaningful.
I don't say it's a perfect game &c, and though it didn't come up to my expectations in some ways, I consider it surpassed my expectations in others. I'm not sure I'd call it a highly polished gem, but my opinion it *is* a gem, which is a lot better than a lot of cheap tawdry colored glass out there that's flashy but doesn't really satisfy.
As for replayability, well - I haven't played long enough to really tell yet, and from what I gather the developers mentioned they'll be addressing some balance stuff (i.e. high population = easy win) - but even if the developers didn't make any changes, I think this is certainly a title worth looking at.
If you like it or not, of course, probably depends on the end on your preferences.
As to Endless Space, my understanding is the original Endless Space offered basically different skins for a lot of different factions, but that there's a cheap DLC that changed a lot.
Never gotten into it and the forced Uplay keeps me from buying the latest part. Ubisoft and EA are pretty much no-go area for me. I did play two spinoffs of Kings Bounty though.
Thanks for the advice, but I don't see myself playing that game anymore. I just hated too many aspects of it. Latest Galactic Civ is a lot better and covers the exact same genre.
Never played it, never heard of it. RPG elements is something I used to love when I was younger, but nowadays I'm mostly skipping written dialogue if it is not voiced over. Am a bit ashamed about my laziness.
Well thanks to all three of you for the replies, I'll watch some youtube videos tomorrow as suggested. Keep the answers coming folks!
But not expect that it is similar. It's different and has a strong RPG (as far as it goes if you are a godness and in an strategy game) with random event component. I also like the very unique fight system. This game is just unique to whatever I played so far - and its great.
Worth the about 20$ or 20€ or whatever - or in sale even less? Hell, ya! Worth every single cent and more. Good replayability (see 80hours) and it will need some iterations before beating the game the first time. My current goal is to beat the game on 250% difficulity without any reloading. But well, the first several 10 hours will go in beating the game on 100% difficulity ;) and that fun was already worth it.
Still I dont know all the possible singe quest choices.
About RPG and written dialouge: I think they are great the first time playing. Sure after some iterations I dont read the details anymore. The 2 main quests are short enough to read and/or listen them first time - the main quests are voiced over with a very good speaker I think.
Oh, and there are always some surprises - like quest choices partly depend on the godness you are playing (but not too much spoiling here ;) )
Holy awesomeness!
@ingosupercute
I bought the game in EA not because it looked particularly appealing, but because of the communication between the dev team and the community. Other studios should look to MuHa as an example.
Thea is not perfect. The forum is loaded with feature requests and (for the most part) civil debate about how features should be implemented. We have these discussions because we know the MuHa team puts our ideas into the game. They don't let their vision of the game interfere with what the community wants.
I have yet to see anyone say that they did not get their money's worth or that they regret the purchase. Even Mac users who bought the game before the Mac edition was released waited patiently and then helped Beta test the Mac version.
TL;DR
In my opinion, Thea is a very fun game, but its strongest selling point is the communication and work rate of the dev team.
Super.Hope you'll enjoy the game :) I'm not a major rogue-like fan but I'm loving this. The only other rogue-like I enjoyed was FTL.
Awesome let us know how you like it. Also the game is very random so try not to be discouraged if your first game goes bad. I know the first few of mine ended in complete failure. Especially my first game. Ended up with a village with only coal and meat and had no clue how I was suppose to gather stuff and the boars killed a couple of villagers and it was all so confusing and vague on what I needed to do. Still its a super fun game and I enjoy it a lot.
Hurray for upcoming DLC. :p
Yeah, I think I screwed up too much on my first game too. I gave up at turn 260 after 6 hours, could not leave my village anymore because there were 4* monsters everywhere and even if I set out with all my fighters at once they would just get completely demolished. Should have researched better things like weapons and not lost so much time in the beginning.
You can find some good starting strategies on the forum, or you can just ask here! :)
Edit: There are two sites with tons of useful information, but be warned they contain spoilers.
The public Wiki: http://thea-the-awakening.wikia.com/
This other site that I haven't come up with a good name for: http://muhagames.com/thea/
I'd say use the Public WIki for basic game info and how to deal with events. The other site is more of a data dump for crafting and recruitment.
