Depends on what you're using it for. Buildings and weapons then use ancient wood. Accessories and armour are situational.

Ancient wood is either equal or far better for pretty much anything except crafting tools. Ancient wood and Wicker are generally the only 2 things I get from the entire Gathering Tree when I am playing 350%, since the Insane economy setting makes it unlikely you will get much more than a dozen RP before T250, by which point I am doing my final farming to finish up Giants.
