I also think it's a far better game, but that at least partially depends on whether you prefer Darius or R-Type gameplay to begin with. It's definitely faster paced.
It occupies about the same place in its series as Gradius V and R-Type Final: maybe not the best entry in the series (those would be Gradius Gaiden, R-Type Delta and Darius Gaiden), but definitely the most content-packed and a worthy capstone to it.
p.s.
Also those kamasutra themes in Final...
R-type Final´s atmsphere was indeed creepy but also quite sad as portrayed in two of its three endings. Such memories...
But as for Darius Burst, its quite Gradius-ish?
Hmmmm. I'm sorely tempted and its the kind of release that should be supported on PC. The graphics didn't look too snappy tbh though.
Help
If you can't decide for yourself, mmm. Have you watched stream of Degica playing/showcasing it?
The graphics make more sense when you realise it was originally made for arcades in 2010, and was running on a Core 2 Duo and Geforce 7600 powering two 1080 monitors side by side. It's low poly for sure, but makes up for it in sheer scale. If you have a very large screen, or two monitors you can place side by side, it's definitely a trip.
It's also got a rather unique mission system that I haven't seen in any other shmup. Give me one second and I'll copy my description of it here.
Edit: Okay, here's my description of the gameplay and the overall game structure.
In this you have a beam which is built up by killing enemies or destroying shots. With the beam you can fire it like normal (which will get you a 4x multiplier on top of whatever your current multiplier is), do a counter-burst on a boss right as they fire theirs (which will do more damange and last longer), or double tap the burst button to place your beam remotely and aim it wherever you like, either offensively or defensively (which lasts longer than a normal beam burst but does not give any extra multiplier). How the beam is aimed and how effective it is depends on the ship you choose (some aim the laser away from you, some toward you), and one of the ships (Gaiden) uses a bomb instead of a beam, like in Darius Gaiden.
Darius traditionally has a branching system of levels (ie you start with A, then choose B or C, then choose D, E or F, etc), which is still here as Original and Original EX modes. In addition to that there are two modes, CS Mode and Chronicle Mode, which are both based around a grid of missions made up of remixed stages, ships, bosses, modifiers and win conditions. In Chronicle Mode everyone online is playing unlocking missions together, in CS mode it's all single player, and CS mode has a more standard aspect ratio for normal screens (the arcade mode was made for two 16:9 screens side by side, and the port reflects this). Original and Original EX both allow up to four players simultaneously, while Chronicle Mode varies depending on stage requirements (the only online component is in how missions are unlocked in Chronicle, actual gameplay only supports local multiplayer). CS Mode is single player only.
Chronicle Mode has about 3,000 missions, CS Mode has about 200.
It's not really an issue with the graphics from a technical side, they're just rather... bland and washed out looking compared to Gaiden and G-Darius? The backgrounds in particular aren't anywhere near as elaborate as what G-Darius had.
I very, very slightly prefer G-Darius, but otherwise, spot on.
I really wish Konami would consider porting Gradius Gaiden (or even any other entry in the series) to Steam though, Satazius was good as far as clones go, but it didn't scratch my Gradius itch sufficiently.
