DARIUSBURST Chronicle Saviours

DARIUSBURST Chronicle Saviours

Statistiche:
How would this compare to R-Type Final?
That's the question!

Are there heaps of ships too?

9 ships, but far more stages and bosses.

I also think it's a far better game, but that at least partially depends on whether you prefer Darius or R-Type gameplay to begin with. It's definitely faster paced.

It occupies about the same place in its series as Gradius V and R-Type Final: maybe not the best entry in the series (those would be Gradius Gaiden, R-Type Delta and Darius Gaiden), but definitely the most content-packed and a worthy capstone to it.

R-type final featured more than a 100 ships, even 3 customizable ones but the level layout was indeed inferior when compared to its previous game (R-type Delta) and slower paced action. Darius Burst may not feature that level of variety (then again, what other shooter does?), but it does offer a larger amount of stages to play with filled with thick formations of enemies and faster action. i honestly like both games though! ;)
R-Type Final has very disturbing creepy atmosphere imho. DB should be more...abstracted

p.s.
Also those kamasutra themes in Final...
I agree, but given the theme of the final stage in the previous R-type Delta, that choice was fitting. It certainly was awkward to play that particular R-type Final stage with friends though!

R-type Final´s atmsphere was indeed creepy but also quite sad as portrayed in two of its three endings. Such memories...

I really wish they'd give us HD versions of some of the R-Type games.

But as for Darius Burst, its quite Gradius-ish?

Hmmmm. I'm sorely tempted and its the kind of release that should be supported on PC. The graphics didn't look too snappy tbh though.

Help
Strange to hear comparison to Gradius considering how Darius is old series too (since 1986)...

If you can't decide for yourself, mmm. Have you watched stream of Degica playing/showcasing it?
I agree, I would also love re-releases of classics such as R-type Delta, R-type Final, Einhander, Gradius V, etc.

I'd say it's much faster paced than either Gradius or R-Type. Those series tend to be very unforgiving of mistakes, while Darius puts you right back in the action with most of your powerups intact.

The graphics make more sense when you realise it was originally made for arcades in 2010, and was running on a Core 2 Duo and Geforce 7600 powering two 1080 monitors side by side. It's low poly for sure, but makes up for it in sheer scale. If you have a very large screen, or two monitors you can place side by side, it's definitely a trip.

It's also got a rather unique mission system that I haven't seen in any other shmup. Give me one second and I'll copy my description of it here.

Edit: Okay, here's my description of the gameplay and the overall game structure.

In this you have a beam which is built up by killing enemies or destroying shots. With the beam you can fire it like normal (which will get you a 4x multiplier on top of whatever your current multiplier is), do a counter-burst on a boss right as they fire theirs (which will do more damange and last longer), or double tap the burst button to place your beam remotely and aim it wherever you like, either offensively or defensively (which lasts longer than a normal beam burst but does not give any extra multiplier). How the beam is aimed and how effective it is depends on the ship you choose (some aim the laser away from you, some toward you), and one of the ships (Gaiden) uses a bomb instead of a beam, like in Darius Gaiden.

Darius traditionally has a branching system of levels (ie you start with A, then choose B or C, then choose D, E or F, etc), which is still here as Original and Original EX modes. In addition to that there are two modes, CS Mode and Chronicle Mode, which are both based around a grid of missions made up of remixed stages, ships, bosses, modifiers and win conditions. In Chronicle Mode everyone online is playing unlocking missions together, in CS mode it's all single player, and CS mode has a more standard aspect ratio for normal screens (the arcade mode was made for two 16:9 screens side by side, and the port reflects this). Original and Original EX both allow up to four players simultaneously, while Chronicle Mode varies depending on stage requirements (the only online component is in how missions are unlocked in Chronicle, actual gameplay only supports local multiplayer). CS Mode is single player only.

Chronicle Mode has about 3,000 missions, CS Mode has about 200.

Have the standards for side-scroling shooters have gone up so high that people think Darius Burst looks bad? I thought the game looked quite nice in the screenshots (just as nice as it looked back in the psp port which I also like quite a bit!) and I certainly am enjoying it quite a bit to see it in motion...
They blame Sine Mora for being more eye-candy.

It's not really an issue with the graphics from a technical side, they're just rather... bland and washed out looking compared to Gaiden and G-Darius? The backgrounds in particular aren't anywhere near as elaborate as what G-Darius had.
I really liked R-Type Final, but I was kinda disappointed at not being able to do much with the 100+ ships beyond complete the same missions.
You´re right Elegnaim. While I do like Darius Burst clean look, the lack of elaborate or wacky ideas for stages that Taito´s older shooters like G-Darius or Metal Black is quite apparent. G-Darius in particular had some really wacky ideas for its stages such as the dinosaur stage with the giant flowers, part of the fun in that title was to find out what each stage looked like in each of its two routes!

How is it possible for one man to have such correct opinions?
I very, very slightly prefer G-Darius, but otherwise, spot on.
Actually, I too consider G-Darius to be the best entry to date, as it easily has the best boss fights overall IMO and the Capture Ball system was just a lovely addition, considering how most of the mid-bosses were excellent meat shields.

I really wish Konami would consider porting Gradius Gaiden (or even any other entry in the series) to Steam though, Satazius was good as far as clones go, but it didn't scratch my Gradius itch sufficiently.
